“Let me borrow that for just a minute then,” he says. “Once I skin the rabbit you can take the ax and go, and I’ll use what’s left of the fire here to start cooking it.”
I hand him the ax and turn away. It’s definitely not something that I want to see.
When I get back to the campsite later after having sourced some fresh water and collected an armful of firewood, I see the smoke rising from the campfire and can smell a delicious scent of meat. I’ve never eaten rabbit before, and have never wanted to, if we’re being honest. But the smell of cooking meat makes my mouth water.
“Wow,” I say as I walk up to Granite and set down all the firewood in my arms. “I must be starving because that actually smells delicious!”
He smiles at me and leans up to give me a kiss.
God, I feel like all of my senses are on overdrive because no matter how tired I am, I still want him. Obviously, he is in no shape for sex, but that doesn’t make the feeling go away.
“I want you terribly,” he says as our mouths pull apart.
I smile because it’s like he read my mind.
After we eat and drink, and sit by the fire to warm ourselves for a while, I open up to Granite about my fears.
“What if we will never be free from everything that has happened?” I ask him.
“What do you mean?” he asks.
“I mean, what if all this bad shit follows us everywhere, no matter how deep into the mountains we go?”
Granite pulls me close to him and rubs my shoulders with his hands.
“Amber, the only place that this stuff can follow us is inside our own heads. Which is no small ordeal, trust me. I know how difficult it is to let go of past fears and angers. But we are in control of what happens now, together. Let all the rest of what is behind us stay there; behind us. Once I heal, we will head out toward that spot of land that I showed you and we will make our dreams become a reality.”
“There’s one more thing that I want to do as soon as you’re healed,” I say as I tilt my head up to kiss his mouth.
“Oh trust me,” he says as he reaches for my hand and lays it atop of his hardened cock. “I knowexactlywhat that is and that will be the very first thing that we do.”
Granite
After a few more days, I am well, and healed enough to move around and get back to myself again. Amber has done an amazing job of doing things that ensured our survival until I was ready to take over. Even though I’m not quite back a hundred percent, we are at least able to start back on the slow journey deeper into the mountains. Since the trek is slow, Amber and I are able to enjoy some of the beauty of the forest along our way. I love to see her look happy as she stops to see unusual flowers or to hear the sound of birds in the trees above us. After a long day of hiking, we are almost there.
“Look,” I say as I point toward the spot. “We’re getting so close now.”
“Why did you pick that spot in particular?” she asks.
“I could see from the mountaintop that it is next to a fresh stream and I think there’s even a small waterfall nearby. That will be good for water and fish, as well as just simply being beautiful. It’s also in an area that is wooded enough to keep us hidden, but still able to be slightly cleared in the center so that we can build.”
“And you’re sure that we’ll be able to survive here for a long time?” she asks.
“Absolutely. All we need is food, water, and shelter. We both know how to source food and water now, and you can even start a garden from some of the seeds in the forest. As far as building, you do remember that is what I did for a living before we got wrapped up in all of this, right?”
“Yes, I didn’t forget. I just thought that it would be more difficult building from actual trees instead of lumber from the store.”
“Oh it will be,” I grinned. “But it will also be a lot more fun and rewarding.”
I spot a little cavern that looks like it is carved out of the side of the mountain and bring Amber along with me to check it out.
“This is so cool,” she says as we step inside. “It’s like a little cave.”
“We should stay here for the night,” I suggest. “It’ll be dark again soon and this is a good place to stay warm and safe.”
“What if it belongs to a bear?” she asks.
“Well then,” I laugh. “I guess we’ll have to share.”
