Outside, Darryn saw them and reached them in a few strides.“What happened?”he barked and put his hands on her shoulders.

“Karen says…she phoned the photographer while I was waiting. The photographer didn’t make the appointment for today. He doesn’t know anything about it.”

Darryn glanced around them quickly before he steered her toward the car.“We have to leave.Now.”He opened the back door for her.

Inside the car, Caitlin held her close.

“We’re going to get to the bottom of this.Don knows an attorney; he phoned him before we left Cape Town. He’s going to contact the police and see what we can do,” she crooned while stroking Hannah’s hair.

“They spoke to me yesterday,” Hannah said.“I said I’d contact them today, but with everything…”

“It’s fine. The Paris Prefecture of Police will know what to do,” Caitlin continued.

Hannah tried to listen to her sister’s voice, her eyes on Darryn’s broad shoulders as he steered the car skillfully through the traffic.

Her phone rang, and she answered without checking who was calling.Maybe Karen had news.Maybe she had it wrong and there was miscommunication, maybe—

“So you think you’re clever?”a voice hissed in her ear.“You were supposed to meet with me alone!”The furious person at the other side of the line took a deep breath.“But remember, I know where you live, I know where your sisters live, I know where your mother—”

Rage tore through Hanna.“Listen to me, you piece of trash! You have a problem with me, you deal with me.Leave my sisters and my mother out of it!”

The next minute, brakes squealed and Darryn stopped the car.Furious, he grabbed her phone.“White, you bastard, if I get my hands on you…”

But whoever had been on the other side had put the phone down.

“Was it White? What did he say? What did he want?”Darryn barked.

Hannah threw her arms in the air.“I don’t know!It could be him—he was shouting, so I can’t be sure!”

Darryn’s head whipped to the front again, and he gripped the steering wheel tightly. The car moved forward again.

“What did he say?”he asked again, his eyes nearly black in the rearview mirror.

“He told me he knows where my sisters and my mother…” Hannah hiccupped, “live.”She ended on a sob.

Darryn muttered a string of curses, and Don put a hand on his arm.Caitlin hugged Hannah close.

Don took out his phone and started punching in a number.

“Don, phone that attorney. We have to let the police know what’s going on,” Caitlin said.

“Exactly what I’m doing,” he said.

“I’m calling David and Dale. They should know what’s going on,” Darryn announced.

Chapter Six

Back in herflat, Hannah stood around, not exactly sure what to do or say next. The surge of anger had left her feeling faint and she was shivering. She’d always hated confrontations and couldn’t remember ever being this angry.

Don and Darryn were both on their phones, and Caitlin was making coffee.Everything looked so normal.Except it wasn’t.

She walked over to her sister, wanting to be close to her.

“Where are your bags?Surely you’ll be staying with me?”she asked Caitlin.

Caitlin looked up.“Are you sure?Because Don got us a suite in the building right next to you, so we could stay there…”

“Please don’t,” Hannah pleaded.“I have more than enough room for you. There are three bedrooms.”
