Damar’s expression brightened. “I can do that. You want a new car for your birthday?”

My eyes widened excitedly. “Really? You’d do that?”

“Hell yeah.”

Blushing, I replied, “But I don’t know what I want.”

“Let’s go look at cars right now then.”

As I grinned, the heaviness of the past few weeks lifted slightly. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

I turned to grab my shoes, but I felt Damar’s hand gently wrap around mine. I looked back, curiously.

“Are you ovulating?” he asked with a playful glint in his eye and a sneaky grin spreading across his face.

I felt my cheeks flush hot at the question. “Um, yes.”

“Then we need to wait to go to the car dealership,” he said teasingly.

I pouted. “But I was looking forward to it.”

He stepped closer as he pulled down his pants. “Oh, we’re still going. I just need a few minutes.”

A few hours later, we were at the second car dealership, and I was taken aback by the cars Damar was showing me. He led me from one luxury vehicle to another, pointing out the sleek lines of a high-end Range Rover and the sporty elegance of a Porsche. I couldn’t afford the note on these cars, but he assured me that he was buying the car, so the note would be his responsibility.

Now we were at the Tesla dealership.

“Come on. Let’s check out that Tesla X,” Damar said with a boyish grin spreading across his face as he pulled me by the hand toward the sleek vehicle.

I smiled, watching him have way more fun with this than I was.

As we approached the vehicle, I was taken aback by its futuristic design. It had sleek curves and a glossy finish. The falcon-wing doors opened upward, giving it an otherworldly appearance.

“Wow. It’s beautiful,” I said, stepping inside.

“Just wait until you see the features,” Damar told me as he settled into the driver’s seat and adjusted the steering wheel. “It practically drives itself.”

I settled into the passenger seat, feeling the plush material envelop me. “Seriously? That’s wild.”

He nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah. It’s got all these safety features too. You can even summon it to you with your phone. Imagine no more walking through the parking lot looking for your ride because you forgot where you parked.”

I laughed, picturing the car navigating its way to me. “Baby, I don’t need this fancy-ass car.”

Damar scoffed. “Girl, I ain’t buying you this. I just wanted to look at it.”

As we burst out laughing, his phone started to ring.

While he answered, I drifted off into my thoughts. His generosity was overwhelming. A blend of excitement and guilt hit me. I had cheated, and now, sitting next to my good husband who loved me and was doing his best to please me, I felt like a fraud.

Things between us might not have been perfect, but he was trying. He was putting in the effort to make me happy, to show me that he cared, and yet, my heart still ached for someone else. I beat myself up for allowing Mythic to consume me, for letting my desires cloud my judgment.

Suddenly, I was snatched out of my thoughts as Damar erupted, his voice loud and filled with anger. His loud bark drew the attention of everyone in the dealership, and I turned to see him with his phone pressed to his ear as he wore an expression of disbelief and heartache. “No. You’re lying. This shit ain’t true.”

I cringed with embarrassment. Every eye in the dealership was on us. Suddenly, Damar started to shake with a look in his eyes that I had never seen before.

“Damar, what’s wrong?” I asked, reaching out to touch his arm to ground him, but my words seemed to fall on deaf ears. He dropped the phone and slammed his fist into the steering wheel with such force that I feared he might break it.

The sound was deafening, and my heart raced as I bent down to pick up the phone. I glanced at the screen and saw it was Stephanie on the line.
