“Does he have anyone with him?” I asked. He rarely traveled alone.

“Five of his men, armed.”

Of course they were. We couldn’t have him coming without his soldiers. Bully. “What should we do?” I asked the room at large, hoping someone had a brilliant idea. The sudden silence didn’t reassure me in the slightest.

“We’d best hurry then,” Justin said. “Can we escape if we follow Oss’s plan?”

Affie swayed. In the dim lighting, his eyes gave off a silvery glow. “That will work.”

“What did you see?” I whispered.

“I see many things, Marbrey. Most aren’t pleasant.” Affie fell silent as if the weight of too many words had crushed his voice once more.

“Let’s go then. Anyone mobile enough, try to help someone who isn’t or grab a child,” Oss ordered.

I was amused that between a soldier and a duke, it was the street rat that gave the orders and was obeyed. Maybe there was something behind him being King of the City of Magic.

Only time would tell.
