Note to self, call work.

I wonder what Mike did with my Jeep. I hope he didn’t sell it. I would love to be able to pick up and go on my own volition, without needing Cal or Nyx, or anyone to take me places. But knowing him, the minute he thought Nyx took off with me, he probably sold it and used the money to buy parts for his rusted truck.

“Oh, look what the cat dragged in.” I hear Mike’s voice before I see him. Just a few moments later, he slams the screen door open on the trailer and comes strolling out with a shotgun slung over his shoulder.

“Put the fucking gun down.” Callum hollers at him and pulls his hand gun out of his waist band of his pants. Shit, I didn’t even know he was packing.

“I don’t take too kindly to people trespassing on my property.” He spits off the side of the deck, and I cringe internally. Cal gives me a look like “this is what you like?” I return it with a shrug of my shoulders. I will have to explain myself later, but it’s fine.

“I’m just here to get my things, Mike. Then you can go on living your merry little life.” My voice comes out stronger than I feel, but I need to keep my confidence up.

“So what, you disappear for a month with that whore of a friend you keep, and then just show up and leave me? Is that what is happening here?” Mike’s snarl shakes me to my core. I never liked the way he talked about Nyx. I can handle his vitriol spit at me, but never her.

I walk towards the wooden steps of the deck, and Mike strides over to the top of the steps, blocking my way into the house. He has his shotgun across his chest, pretending like he has any sort of military training. Callum’s presence is strong and steady behind me, lending me the strength I need to push on.

“Leave Nyx out of this. I will collect my belongings and be out of this hellhole of a relationship. Now, if you will excuse me.” I shove past Mike, and he stumbles off to the side with shock written on his face.

“This is no longer your house, woman.” I cringe with my back to him. I have always hated when he called me ‘woman’.

“You’re right its not her house anymore, but guess what, her belongings are in there, and she is going to grab the things she wants, and then we will leave…your house.”Callum sneers at him. Towering well over a half a foot taller than Mike and carrying a lot more muscle, Mike makes the smart choice to take a few steps back, staying on the porch while we go inside.

Cal is still holding his gun, just in case Mike gets any crazy ideas about doing anything against him. I walk quickly back to the bedroom and snag my luggage out of the closet. I am not really sure why I bought luggage a few years ago, considering we don’t ever travel anywhere except up north to visit his family. That is usually only for a few days at a time, if he even bothers to take me with him. Maybe it was with hopes that I would be able to get him to take me places.

That’s a funny joke. We both know that the only places that Mike goes willingly are out in the woods or on some trout stream.

Once again, the voice is right. I was never going to get him to give up his precious free time to travel the world with me. Also, we would have never been able to pay for it.

BANG.

The front door slams open. Mike must have finally realized that we have pushed him around, and he is not going to stand for it. His boots slam through the house, and I can feel every single stomp he makes.

“You will not disrespect me in my own home.” Mike’s voice is full of rage. Cal steps in his way to stop him from getting to me.

“Let him through,” I say quietly.

There is no way for me to get over this if I don’t let him get whatever it is he needs to get out. Mike will not go quietly; he will not let me leave unless he thinks it’s his idea. My job now is to convince him he needs to leave me.

CHAPTER 19

KYRA

My knees tremble beneath my weight. I know that what comes next is going to be the worst of Mike. Silently, I make eye contact with Callum, willing him to allow whatever needs to happen to happen, right now. If we don’t allow him to work through whatever rage is boiling inside of him, he will never leave us alone, and I need him to just forget about me.

Mike storms past Cal with a shoulder to the gut due to their height differences. Cal growls at him and follows him step by step across the floor. With Mike standing before me, my eyes lowered to the floor out of instinct. He brings his pointer finger to my chin, and I suck in a quick breath.

“So Woman,” his voice filled with rage. “Do you want to tell me what you have been up to for the last month?”

“I was kidnapped with Nyx by her ex and his cousin.” My voice trembles as I tell him.

“DON’T FUCKING LIE TO ME.” My ears ring from his voice.

“I’m…I’m not lying.”

“I was part of the rescue mission; I can attest to their kidnapping. Nyx is with my older brother.” Callum cuts in, trying to help.

“I didn’t ask for your fucking input. You’re probably fucking this skank I called a fiancé.” Mike snaps over his shoulder at Cal.

“Don’t Cal-“
