I shook my head to let him know my injuries weren't as bad as he thought. "Gino," I rasped, my voice hoarse and raw. "Where is he?"
Enzo's jaw clenched. "I don't know. I haven't seen him."
Rage surged through me, white-hot and all-consuming. I pushed away from Luca, staggering a few steps before finding my balance. "I'm going after him," I growled. "I need to kill him."
Ignoring the bullets flying around us, Luca stepped in front of me, appearing so suddenly I almost fell on my ass. "We will, T. I promise you that. But right now, we need to get the fuck out of here and go somewhere safe. You're in no condition to go after him like this. And we can't hold these guys off much longer. There's too many of them and we're running out of bullets."
I stiffened. The training that was so ingrained in me rising to the surface.Ishould be protectinghim, not the other way around. I wanted to argue, but I knew he was right. I could barely stand up straight. Reluctantly, I nodded in agreement and got into the SUV.
"Luca! Get in!"
Enzo opened the passenger side door and climbed over to the driver's side, with Luca right behind him. The SUV was built to withstand this kind of thing, but now that we were safe inside, we needed to get the fuck out of there before someone out there with half a brain decided to take out the tires.
As we sped away from the ranch, leaving the carnage behind us, I leaned my head back against the seat and closed my eyes, trying not to think about what would've happened if they hadn't shown up.
Suddenly, I jerked my head up. "Luna?"
"She's at the house with her brother," Luca told me.
Enzo glanced into the rearview mirror. "We're being followed."
"Just stay ahead of them," Luca said. "We'll lose them once we get back to the highway."
I tried to slow my racing heart. Every inch of my body ached, the aftershocks of the cattle prod still crackling through my muscles. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the rage that consumed me.
Gino had fucking escaped.
Again.
The man who had tortured me, broken me, turned me into the monster I was today, was still out there. And I now saw that as long as he drew breath, I would never be safe.Lunawould never be safe. He'd gone rogue. Luca's position in the family wouldn't protect me anymore.
I clenched my fists, ignoring the sharp bite of my nails digging into my palms. I had to find him. I had to end this, once and for all.
But first, I needed to seeher.
The tires squealed as Enzo took a sharp turn, throwing me against the door. I gritted my teeth against the fresh wave of pain that shot through me.
"Almost there," Luca said from the front seat, his voice tight with tension.
I didn't respond, my mind already racing ahead to the moment I would lay eyes on Luna again.
Once we made it to the highway, Enzo was able to lose the car following us before we hit rush hour traffic driving into Austin.
A hundred years later, the SUV finally rolled to a stop, and I was out the door before Enzo had even put it in park. I staggered, my legs nearly giving out beneath me, but I pushed forward, propelled by the desperate need to see her.
I burst through the front door, my heart hammering in my chest as Luca and Enzo yelled at me to wait.
And then she was there, her face a little battered but still beautiful, and I could breathe again.
CHAPTER7
Luna
Veda’s question rang in my ears.
Gino won't be alive much longer. Will that upset you?
I thought about everything that fucker had done and shook my head. "I can’t believe I’m saying this,” I told her. “But no. I don't think that will bother me at all." Wiping my face with a tissue, I blew my nose. "He’s my father by blood, but that’s it. He’s never done anything for me but donate his sperm. And right now, he’s doing god only knows what to Tristan." My voice broke and fresh tears filled my eyes.
