I reach my finger out to tap the tip of her nose. “The one who is sleeping in my guest room because for one night she took a chance and decided I’m the guy she could have an adventure with.”

“A nightmare. That’s what this is.” The line of her lips twists.

“Then why is a smile curling on your lips, and ten seconds ago, your hands found their way to my arms to hold, as if I’m the guy every woman wants to fuck but they won’t because you’re making a public claim.”

Her eyes drop down to see that she is holding my wrists in an affectionate manner. She instantly drops my arms, and I hate that something feels absent.

“You will be a gentleman, a perfect gentleman tomorrow,” she calls out a warning before turning to march away in a mood, leaving me to smile internally to myself.

She only marches a few steps before she makes a sharp turn to look at me. "We're acting insane."

"Completely." I can only agree, with my grin pulling on the corners of my mouth.

The hard line on her mouth disappears and a gentle smile begins to spread. "We always bicker."

"Isn't it fun?"

Her cheeks tighten because her smile only grows.

"Pizza tonight? I think Hadley will love to make her own pizza, and I can do a cauliflower crust so she has no clue she's eating a vegetable," she rambles as her temper from a minute ago fades into oblivion.

Hell, I'm no longer in the mood to spar. Not after she just made that offer for dinner.

"She will love that." And I do too.

One nod and then April begins to turn slowly, her smile not fading.

"You still better be a gentleman tomorrow," she reminds me with a little wave goodbye in the air.

"Still debating," I tell her, purely to keep the banter up.

But looking down at Pickles who wails a sound when he looks up at me, I know that every living creature can analyze this situation and see a fire.

A fire that I hate to admit, but I don’t think I want to escape the flames.

APRIL

Well, this is ridiculous.

I look over my shoulder at my reflection in the long mirror.

“I’m not sure I should be wearing this,” I mention as I take in the fact this long black dress is near backless which means no bra for me, especially as it ties around my neck.

“Spencer picked this out?” Piper asks for the tenth time as she sits at the edge of the guest bed, focusing between her baby girl lying on the mattress playing with a toy and staring at me in my predicament.

I can’t tear my eyes away from the mirror. “This is not what I had in mind.”

Piper smiles like a cat who found their prey. “The slit between your cleavage is a bold choice.”

My eyes grow into saucers. “I know, right? But…”

Her smile grows wide. “You look smoking.”

My own excitement comes out, especially because my updo is perfection. “Idolook smoking.”

This dress hugs me in all the right places, and it’s a beautiful and very expensive dress. I’m not sure I want to know how Spencer managed to pick this out, he had to have enlisted someone’s help. I feel like a million bucks.
