He takes it up a notch and moves in, with his mouth landing near my neck. The feeling of his breath spreads against my skin. A flicker of a flashback of him doing this once before hits me, and my body curves into him in response. Then he places a kiss to the side of my neck with a little teeth action for good measure.
I softly gasp from the bite, but I play along. “Babe, I just needed to grab the cheese, then we can head home.”
“You’re living with him?” Jett asks, confused.
“Jett is the brother of my… ex,” I mutter in explanation with a tight smile.
Spencer entwines his fingers with mine to hold my hand before looking to Jett. “Well, only unwise men give up another man’s treasure.” He tugs my hand. “Come on, I’m sure Sean behind the counter will toss us the…” Spencer flashes a persuasive grin to the college-aged guy in an apron behind the counter before turning to me to answer.
I’m in a daze from the last minute. “Oh, right, fresh parmesan and pecorino.”
“Sounds delicious. Hope we actually make it to the main course this time.”
My eyes blaze open, as he is laying it on a little thick.
Jett looks between us. “I… it was good seeing you.”
“Yeah, same,” I call out as he waves, and his minions follow as he walks away.
When the group of guys are out of our sight, my attention reverts back to Spencer who is biting his inner cheek.
“Isn’t pecorino the same as parmesan?” He is attempting to ignore the fact of what he just did.
“I’m not a damsel in distress,” I rasp because his poisonous spell is clearly affecting me.
His eyes look at my mouth and then back to my eyes. “Of course not.”
Realizing we are still in an embrace, I push against his chest with my palms. “We should probably go.”
“Good idea.”

APRIL
That man is a curse.
In the last forty-eight hours, Spencer has brought nothing but bad luck to me.
I was silent on our way back to his house. In truth, my thoughts couldn’t muster any words, as I was lost in what just happened over the last hour. If I'm honest with myself, I know it’s because I feel I wasn’t good enough for my ex, which only infuriates me. Then Spencer acted… chivalrous.
Following Spencer into his kitchen, we both carry groceries. He stalls when he sets the bags on the counter.
He tilts his head at different angles. “Your dog is lazy.”
My eyes follow his line of sight to see Pickles in the same spot that we left him in before we went into town.
“He isn’t lazy. He is just enjoying the finer things in life which is called relaxation. Don’t be a hater on his life balance,” I chide.
“As long as he doesn’t destroy anything in the house, then he can enjoy his life of Zen.”
I blow out a breath because I feel uneasy. I’m not quite sure what to do with this nervous energy.
“I’m sure you can handle this.” I indicate to the groceries, knowing that I’m acting a smidgen too bitchy even for my standards, but it feels like a part that I need to keep playing.. “I’m going to go swim in the lake.”
“It’s early October?” Spencer questions.
“Cold water is good for the skin.”
