Incredibly confident and charming…

But kind.

Sweet.

Earnest.

At the end of the day, though, he was still mafia.

Why couldn’t he have been a guy with a regular job? Just an ordinary hot guy who worked in a boring office somewhere?

There was also that thing he’d said at the end that made me think he might be different:

I swear it on the lives of my mother and father.

Like promises were sacred to him –

That he would never break his word.

I didn’t know quite what to make of that…

But it impressed me for some reason I couldn’t explain.

Still, I hated that he was going to plow ahead and do whatever he wanted, even though I’d told him ‘no.’

Thatpart was all too familiar.

I prayed silently,PLEASE let this not be like last time.

PLEASE.

Iwalked over to the dress shop.

Bianca and Adriano were chatting inside. She was arranging a mannequin display, and he was cutting open packing boxes with a switchblade. Lucia wasn’t there today, apparently, and Raffaello must have already left.

Adriano looked over as I walked in. “That wasn’t an hour. What happened?”

“She knows what I do for a living.”

“Youtoldher?!”

“No, she’d already figured it out.”

“…oh.”

“Who’s this?” Bianca asked, suddenly interested.

“He likes a girl who works in the café next door,” Adriano explained.

“Hey!” I barked.

He gave me a look likeDon’t get your panties in a twist.

“The blonde?” Bianca asked.
