Knight: Yes. And I’m so damn proud of you for it.
Kane: Well, I’m in the middle of a case, and I think she could use your assistance. In fact, I think Leo needs you too, Knight.
Knight: Leo?
Kane: Shit. Sorry. That’s what we call Boyd now. We both joined a motorcycle club here in Rising Star. The Celestial Sons MC.
Knight: Boyd did have a love for motorcycles that was unmatched.
Kane: ? He doesn’t ride anymore, unfortunately. Not since… well… returning home.
Knight: I see. Sounds like Boyd, erhm, I mean Leo, is lost again.
Kane: It’s worse this time, Knight. Way worse.
Knight: Well, fortunately for you, I have something that I think will brighten his day. I was planning on making a trip to Rising Star later this month, anyway. I guess I can move up my plans and be there in a few days. The item I was waiting on got here a bit early.
Kane: Item?
Knight: ?? You’ll have to wait and see, but it’s sure to put a pep in our boy’s step.
Kane: That step is faltered lately. He won’t even use his crutches or the prosthetic leg we gave him.
Knight: Yeah, sounds like I’m definitely needed in Rising Star. I’ll reach out to him, and let him know I’m coming. I don’t want the Lion to get skittish and race off before I even have a chance to help him.
Kane: Probably a good idea. I’ll see you soon.
My phone rang at the same time I closed up my laptop. Reaching out to Knight was the right move, I just hoped Ruby would be open to talking with him. The way she shut out her therapist was crazy. She didn’t want to talk about anything that happened to her, so I guess I was lucky she had opened up to me the way she did. Before I could check on her, my phone rang.
“Go for Cap.”
“Church in ten minutes,” Zodiac barked into the phone. Deep anger resonated in his voice; I could feel it through the receiver.
“What’s going on?”
“Just get here quick.”
“Okay, I’ll be there in five.”
Ruby came out of her bedroom dressed in a white off the shoulder sweater top, and denim jeans. Every curve looked dangerous, but they were curves I would explore any day, if the situation between us wasn’t so messed up. She was my client, and my impure thoughts needed to stop to keep our relationship as professional as possible.
“I have to go…” I stated, realizing I had to leave Ruby here in order to go to the clubhouse.
She must’ve seen the terror in my eyes, because she smiled. “And you’re afraid to leave me alone.”
I nodded. “Not that I don’t trust you… I just don’t know if you’re ready for…”
“Being left alone with my dark thoughts?”
“Yes.”
“You’re probably right. Tell you what, I’ll go with you, but I’m not promising I’ll get out of your vehicle, or go inside.”
“That’s fair. I appreciate the fact that you’re even willing to come. I know how hard that must be for you.”
“Well, you did say it was time to slay my demons. Little steps for now.”
“Little steps are all I ask for. I’d call for a prospect to come sit with you, but they’re asking for a club meeting. It means all hands on deck. And I’m not exactly sure what’s going on. Zodiac sounded pissed, and that’s not like him.”
