That lie told with such a straight face and a heavy dose of sincerity deserved an Oscar. Maybe I should take myself out to Hollywood and give acting a shot because apparently, I could sling bull and make it be believable with the way he responded.

He made a pitiful attempt at self-pity and it was completely see through. He wanted to be consoled and thought that I was a good mark for his needs.“It just wasn’t meant to be.”

“You’ll find someone else as gullible as Cami, Jeff, but it’s not me.” I took the tray of drinks from him as the anger washed over his face. It took everything in me to keep from laughing out loud at his look of astonishment, but fuck it. I was angry.

Was there a fucking sign on my forehead that told everyone in the world that they could treat me like shit, and I would lie down and take it? Jeff was a piece of shit, so was Cami, and I meant what I said. They were perfect for each other because they deserved to make each other miserable.

I moved to my table where two guys in nice suits were sitting. Both men were big with broad shoulders and what I would guess were rock hard bodies under the fabric of their expensive suits. They were deep in conversation, but cut off as soon as I got within earshot.

“Here are your beers.” I set the frothy brews down in front of the men. I swore they looked like they would drink something more sophisticated than a beer, but when I asked what they wanted, they kept it simple. “Do you know what you would like to eat?”

I didn’t really pay attention when I had taken their drink order, but I was paying attention now as I looked at the man in front of me. His dark hair had a touch of gray that made him look distinguished. The goatee also had a touch of silver, and I found I liked that a lot.

My stomach tightened and my nerves fizzled and popped like champagne bubbles. “I’ll have the rib eye, medium, with a salad and potato.” His voice was smooth and seductive. I would pay to listen to him talk. If he narrated audiobooks, his voice would be so captivating it would make women everywhere infatuated.

“Sure.” My voice was breathless. What was wrong with me?Get a grip, Zoey, I chastised myself silently. “And for you, sir?” I looked at his companion.

Damn, he was handsome, too. His suit wasn’t as nice, and he had more of a didn’t give a fuck look to him. He had gauges in his ears and tattoos peeking up from under the unbuttoned neck of his suit shirt. They looked about the same age, but this guy’s hair hadn’t yet turned gray.

“A burger. Medium. Everything on it with fries.”

I nodded. “Did you want mayo, mustard, ketchup?”

“Mustard.”

I smiled at both of them and reached for their menus. “I’ll get that put in. Is there anything else I can get you?”

“No thanks, Darlin’,” the guy with the seductive voice said, handing me his menu, and I swear my nipples pebbled beneath my bra at the use of the nickname as a delicious warmth spread in my chest and between my legs.

I spun around to leave the table and to get as far away from the man as I could. Both men were gorgeous, but only one of them caused that flaming reaction that unnerved me. It was my best option to stay far, far away from him.

Chapter 7

Killian

Zoey didn’t come backto our table. Instead, a short blonde with a flirtatious attitude and rocking body delivered our food. It was fine that Zoey didn’t come back because it gave me time to observe her as she worked.
