Lucas shot Donna a quick glance before returning the woman’s smile. “It was my civic duty. Your friend seemed very confused.”

Donna let out a nervous laugh and moved toward the woman. She was acting as if she couldn’t get away from him fast enough.

“Well, thank you.” She turned to the woman and placed her hand on her upper arm. “Let’s go,” she urged.

“Yes.” The woman began to walk away but stopped and looked at Donna. “Kateri, why don’t you invite this nice man to the gala?

“What? Oh, I-I don’t think—”

“Of course,” the woman beamed. “I’m Clara and this is Kateri. We’re from The Blood of the Chosen religious community.”

Lucas had suspected, but now he was sure. Bella had told him that Donna was on an undercover assignment. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that The Blood of the Chosen was her target.

“We are hosting a gala to end all galas. And you, sir, are invited.” She reached in her purse and pulled out an envelope. “We’d love to see you there. Right, Kateri?” She winked as she handed it to him.

Lucas could’ve been wrong, but it seemed like Clara was pimping Donna out.

“Absolutely,” Donna confirmed with a sugary grin that appeared to be more of a threat than an invitation.

“Thank you for the invitation. It was nice to meet you, ladies.”

“It was our pleasure,” the woman bubbled.

Lucas nodded and decided to give Donna a little peace by getting the hell outta dodge.
