I sighed heavily. “I’ll go make you something to eat. Donotget out of this bed.”

I expected him to argue. Instead, he asked, “Can I have some pain medication too?”

All the frustration and anger drained right out of me. Sinking onto the side of the bed, I brushed his hair away from his forehead. “Where’s it hurt, baby doll?”

“Everywhere,” he replied. “Remind me to never crawl through broken glass again.”

My teeth gnashed at the memory of the broken glass with blood all over it at his apartment. “Hazard,” I said, voice gruff. “Did you see who did this to you?”

He nodded.

“Do you know them?”

He shook his head. “I’ve never seen them before in my life.”

“How many were there?”

“Three.”

I let out a choked sound, imagining him facing off with three attackers alone. “I want to know every detail. Everything you can remember.”

“It’s all kinda hazy. I was scared. And in a rush to get away,” he said, lowering his eyes to the bed.

“It’s okay, doll.” I reassured him, leaning in to kiss his temple. “Just tell me what you can.” I stood from the bed. “But first, food and medication.”

When I was at the door, he called my name. “Kieran?”

I turned back. His cheeks were pink, and his hands were hidden by the too-long sleeves of my shirt. “Thank you. For everything.”

Warmth expanded my chest, the sensation strange. Not at all how I felt when completing a job.

This was different.More.

Maybe I could do this after all. Maybe I could keep this little hazard alive.

I was plating steaming slices of thick French toast when something vibrated nearby. Glancing behind me at the island, I saw my phone where it had lain forgotten on the counter since we’d come in last night.

My mind drifted to the gym and the confrontation in the shower. I’d forgotten about that too. After finding Haz, nothing else mattered. But now my curiosity was piqued.

Grabbing the phone, I called up the texts, finding one from an unknown number. The address of whoever it was these men thought they could force me to kill.

Like hell I’d do their dirty work.

I read the address.

Read it again.

A hot-and-cold sensation burst in my gut while disbelief and fury clouded my head.

Out of all the people in this city—hell, the entireglobe. What were the odds?Impossible.I gazed around the empty kitchen, almost expecting someone to laugh.

But this wasn’t a joke. If it was…The joke’s on me.

Jaw clenched, I stared down the hall toward my bedroom where the man I’d involuntarily obsessed over lay broken and bruised.

The man the mob demanded I assassinate. The only man I’d ever wanted to keep alive.
