“A few things, but first, tell me some things you like to do.”

I lifted my glass of orange juice to my mouth and took a sip. Before it hit the back of my throat, the few bites of food I’d eaten and the orange juice came back up. This time, I didn’t have time to make it to the bathroom, and I vomited on Kilo’s beautiful hardwood floors.

“Oh God!” I mumbled with my hand over my mouth.

The urge to vomit again was strong, so I ran to the powder room and made it to the toilet just in time. Today was worsethan last night because my stomach was mostly empty. When I finally got myself together, Kilo stood at the door holding the pregnancy test. I sighed as I took it from him and reached for the door.

“You want to watch?” I asked, slightly amused.

“You damn right. Do you need help?”

I laughed. “I think I can handle it.”

I sat on the toilet and removed the test from its packaging. The process took less than a minute, and Kilo kept his eyes on me the whole time as he leaned against the doorframe.

After peeing on the stick, I placed it on the counter, and he stepped further into the bathroom to stand in front of the sink. I cleaned myself up and barely had enough room in front of the sink to wash my hands because Kilo’s eyes were glued to the test.

“The results will be the same if you look away,” I teased.

“Is the mother of my child teasing me?”

“What? No way!”

I picked up the test, and the two lines were dark and prominent, leaving no confusion about the results.

“Is it normal for a woman to get her period when she’s pregnant?” he asked in a concerned tone.

With my eyes still on the two lines, I said, “Umm, I don’t think so, but spotting isn’t abnormal.”

“When can you see your doctor?”

“I can look at the app and see if there are any openings.”

“Let’s do that right now.”

I tore a napkin from the roll he had in the bathroom and wrapped it around the test. He held it as I washed my hands and we returned to the kitchen. I picked up my phone from the counter, entered the code, and went to the app for my doctor’s office.

As I entered the login information, Nyeem’s face filled my screen as my phone rang.

“Hey, Son,” I answered, putting it on speaker.

“Hey, Ma. You busy?”

“Not really. You okay?”

“I’m better. Mimi made all my favorites yesterday, then me and GP were up half the night watching my old footage from football and track.”

“You’re spoiled rotten, but I’m glad they took your mind off everything.”

“Yeah. It was cool, but that’s over now. Uncle Robby got here bright and early this morning, and he’s been on one.”

“What do you mean?”

“Can you come to Mimi and GP’s?”

“Umm, sure. Right now?”

“If you can.”
