I didn’t respond, but I agreed with him. Something about this felt right, and it was hard to settle into my feelings because they came at me fast.

“I have a confession,” I said.

“Let me hear it.”

“I wanted to know more about you, so I looked you up online.”

“Oh, really? Did you find anything interesting?”

“Nothing juicy aside from you playing professional football.”

“Were you expecting to find something scandalous?” he questioned with a laugh.

“I mean, you were a professional athlete.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised but also a little disappointed.”

“Explain.”

“I was looking for a reason not to like you, but your image is squeaky clean.”

“Nah. I just do my dirt on the low.”

I waited to see if he was joking, but when he didn’t say anything, I looked up at him.

“What?” he questioned with a smirk.

“Do I need to worry about your skeletons randomly popping up?”

“Possibly. I have a closet full of them.”

I lifted my head even more to get a better view of his face. He hadn’t cracked a smile, and I had no idea if he was serious.

“Kilo, I?—”

“I’m just fucking with you, baby. I got nothing to hide.”

I playfully hit his chest before returning my head to it.

“You play too much.”

“You should’ve seen the look on your face. I’m surprised you didn’t jump outta bed and make a run for it.”

“Whatever, nigga. I enjoy having a drama-free life.”

“Me too. That’s why you didn’t find anything. My parents don’t play that shit, and I said don’t because they didn’t when I was growing up, and they don’t now. Neither of them has a problem popping my brother and me in the mouth, upside the head, or squaring up if it came down to it.”

“It sounds like you have great parents.”

“I think so. You’ll meet them in a few weeks when they come for a visit.”

I lifted my head to look at him again.

“You want me to meet your parents already?”

“You’re the first woman I’ve dated with intention since I was in college. I might FaceTime them tomorrow to do a soft launch just to show you how serious I am about you.”
