“That didn’t stop him, unfortunately,” Saint fumed.

“Nope, our girl did that,” Sinn chimed with pride in his voice.

Kira looked at him over her shoulder and smiled.A lightness had erased the murky depths where her pain had lingered. Finally, she could move past everything that had weighed her down.No more running away from her future.

“Yes, she did,” Lucifer said.“I’ll take care of this mess.Finish what I should’ve finished two years ago.If you ever need me, Kira...”

“She won’t,” Saint assured him.

Lucifer nodded.“Can we salvage our trade agreement?”

Saint stared at him for a moment.“Yeah,” he finally replied.“Let’s talk soon.”

Lucifer held out his hand, and Saint shook it.Kira left the cabin without looking back.Keeping the past in the cabin, happy when Lucifer burned it down.

Chapter Seventeen

Saint and Sinn satin their respective seats at the head of the table, watching as the core members filed in.He saw the confusion on their faces as they glanced to where Cas would sit. It’d been a week since the events at the cabin, and rumors were swirling.Saint knew he had to settle what happened.Once everyone was seated, he glanced at his core members, Warden, Jade, Snow, Nero, and Vane.Once upon a time, he would’ve trusted all of them without question. Now, he didn’t like that he couldn’t.He banged the gavel to get church started.

“There is an issue I must address,” he said.“Pertaining to Cas.”

No one said anything.

“First, I want to say that the money from our trade with the Bone Breakers was recovered.”Surprise and relief lined each face.“However, it revealed a very ugly snake in our ranks, because the theft of the money had been orchestrated by Cas.”

A murmur of disagreement rose, and he let the questions circulate. Some denied it.Some cursed. Some didn’t know what to think. He stood up and the rumblings stopped to hear what he had to say next.

“Cas worked with his cousin, who had once prospected with Bone Breakers, until he violated one of their rules. He was kicked out.Together, they came up with their plan to steal the money and frame Lucifer.”

“Where’s Cas now?”Warden asked.

“Dead.”The members looked amongst themselves.“He confessed before he died.”

He gestured for Sinn to play the audio, and there, for all to hear, Cas confessed. When it was over, the only thing left to feel was betrayal.
