I exploded my pheromones and killed another siren that was walking behind my father as he seemingly did the same for me.

“They usually run in threes,” he muttered, and I shrugged. “Most of the dragons have retreated.”

“Roak must finally be dead.” My chest squeezed. I hoped that that was the case.

“At least your mate won't have to worry about that anymore. Is that black goo fucker here?” He ran a hand through his hair, glancing around.

“He's dead.”

“That’s good. He was fucking creepy.”

“Where's my mother?”

Father’s laughter surrounded us as he wiped a stray tear from his eye from laughing so hard. “Do you really think that woman would actually go into war and fight, even for herself?”

My answer was immediate. “Never.”

My father threw his head back and laughed again. “But I guess one good thing did come out of her.”

“Yeah. What's that?” I scanned our immediate area to find no threats.

“You, Rhett. I know I haven't been a good father to you.”

“Understatement of the century.” My skin pricked.

I didn't plan on having a moment with my father in the middle of this war, especially as six or seven sirens closed in around us from a distance.

“Listen, I'm trying. Can you at least let me do that?”

I swallowed the sarcastic remark on my tongue and nodded, thinking about what Wren would say if she were here. “We'll see how long you do that.” I flicked my tail as my horns seeped out of my skull, and we threw ourselves into battle once again.

FORTY-THREE

Damien

"Look,Ididn'tmeananything by it. I just meant that if I can survive that—”

“That's not the point!” Mom's screech even made the icedrake wince.

I waved my hand at the icedrake as it blinked at us.

“Your mother is right, Damien. You should have told us immediately.” Dad shook his head.

“Hey, guys, it's not that big of a deal.” I groaned, knowing that I shouldn't have let that slip.

But they had accused me of being a little too hectic, when I'm always hectic—and now they're blaming it on the fact that I went and got my head cut off.

“But it's back on now. I don't see the big deal.”

Mom's jaw unhinged as her tail flicked behind her. “Roman, get your son.” She threw her hands up, anger slicing through her magic. Black smoke pulsed around her, and I glanced up at the black clouds smearing the sky. They expelled a low rumble as jagged plops of rain jabbed through the land.

An enormous tremor sent us catching our balance on our feet as the icedrake slammed its large foot into the ground as if it was irritated that we had turned our back on it.

I rolled my eyes as water spewed from its mouth before freezing into jagged edges on the ground.

“Testy,” I grunted, using my telekinesis to hold it in place. I let a few of my tendrils wrap around a few scales and forced them from its body.

It would shrink if it could, but it was unable to move thanks to my power.
