Trixie pointed at him and an orange bolt of what looked like lightning shot into his chest. His flames dissipated as soon as it made contact. “Don’t youdaretry to intimidate me with fire magic. I’m a witch, Nate. Your magic doesn’t scare me! Your attitude doesn’t scare me! Your anger only serves to piss me off.” She crossed her arms and glared at him before noticing us walking up to them. “Consider whatever this is between us over.”
His lip curled back in a snarl. He stepped forward to say something else, but Lachlan stepped between the two. “You heard her. If she says you’re over, then there’s no point in hanging around.”
Nate shook his head before his heated gaze settled on me. Hatred burned in his eyes, and I flinched at the intensity.
“Don’t look at her,” Lachlan snarled, stepping in front of me and growling at Nate, who didn’t reply. He just spun around and stormed off.
My body shook, but I kept my head up. Lachlan turned to wrap me up in his arms, and I leaned into his chest.
Trixie visibly relaxed when he was out of sight. “I don’t know who that fucker is anymore. This weekend, he had been so out of it… soangry. I tried to figure out what the problem was, but he just kept yelling at me. I don’t handle being yelled at well, but this time, he tried to use his magic on me. I caught him being shady, talking to the flames. I asked him who he was talking to, and he completely snapped on me,” she explained with her lips pouted. “I’m sorry for canceling on you, Callie, and I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you until now, Wren. Lachlan, thank you for telling him to leave.”
Lachlan scratched the back of his head. “I’m glad you got away from that loser,” he said, and Trixie laughed.
“Yeah, me too. He might have been good in bed, but he’s not that good.”
Callie’s face reddened.
“Trixie!” I giggled as I hid my face in Lachlan’s chest.
“What? You can’t tell me that you don’t understand because you are always blissfully happy after you get laid. Well, I want to get laid too! I just didn’t want to have to go look for it all the time.” She rolled her eyes.
”Is that seriously why you stayed with him so long?” Callie’s eyes widened.
Trixie shrugged. “Yes, and because someone else kind of hated it… and that someone’s cute when he’s mad.”
“Who are you talking about?” I asked.
She rubbed her hands together with a cackle. “I’ll tell you as soon as I know if the feelings are actually mutual.”
TWENTY-FIVE
Wren
“Canyoubelievehim?”Samson balked as we stepped into the witch’s shop in the marketplace.
The scent of fresh and dried herbs filled me with excitement.
Trixie snorted. “Uh, yeah. It’s Damien.”
“Ah, a very pissed off Damien,” Lachlan corrected, grinning ear-to-ear.
“He just wanted to spend time with his mate,” Callie defended him, lacing her hand through Samson’s.
“It’s my turn today,” Lachlan whined.
“Which is why I suggested she bring you along,” Trixie assured him in the same way you’d reassure a child.
Laughter crossed my lips, but I covered it up with my hand. Lachlan was sweet. I hadn’t been able to spend much time with him lately, and I’d loved that he wanted to come with me today. Lachlan was the one mate of mine that I hadn’t had enough time with, and I wanted to change that.
My friends continued to chat about how upset my shadow demon mate was that he couldn’t accompany us, but Norman wanted his help with torturing the specimens to see if they could feel any pain.
I caught a whiff of licorice before I scurried off toward a large uncovered jar of a dried herb that had hints of purple within the green. It may have been an herb I had never been able to get my hands on, but I wasn’t sure since I’d never seen it in person.
“Ah, you’re the herbalist that’s a student at Fate Hollow Academy,” a creaky voice croaked, and I smiled at the older witch who owned the shop. “I’m glad to see that you’re back.”
“I’m so glad to be back. I’m Wren, by the way. I don’t think I had a chance to introduce myself last time.”
“Aren’t you just a treat?” She laughed. “My name is Jan.”
