“They both slept with me last night—”
“You and Rhett had sex?” Thorn gasped.
“No!” I slapped my hands over my heated cheeks. “I mean, Damien and I did for like a few minutes… a really great few minutes because of Rhett’s pheromones over my skin… but that’s not what I mean! I mean we slept in the same bed. They’re probably getting breakfast or something.”
A growl and curse of some flower came through, and I bit my lip.
Rowan cleared his throat. “We wanted to tell you all that there was another specimen on campus. This time, it killed a student. Norman was able to disable it for further studying, which made him happy.”
“Gleeful, really,” Thorn added. “He and Damien would get on amazingly well.”
“Who did it kill?”
“It was a male wolf shifter named Toby. I don’t think you knew him,” Thorn told me.
“I’ll pass along the message,” I promised.
I hated that humans were still getting onto campus. We had to get to the bottom of who was letting them in or helping them. I had my doubts it was only one person. There were too many occasions of it happening. I hated that students were losing their lives due to the failure of the safety nets.
“I love you,” the two of them said at the same time.
“I love you both. So much.” My heart swelled and filled the bond. Icy and sweltering magic trickled over me from both of their bonds, and I bit down a moan.
“Stay safe, and tell the demons we’re mad at them,” Rowan grumbled as Thorn agreed.
After a few more goodbyes and my soul aching from the distance, I hung up the call.
Brown leather caught my attention as I stuffed the tablet back in my bag. A strange pull resonated from the book sitting on the nightstand, and I grabbed it without much thought before opening it.
Rhett’s cherry scent wafted from the pages of cursive writing, and I inhaled deeply as my name caught my gaze. I snapped it shut once I realized it was a private journal—thankfully, I noticed before I read anything more than my name.
The door creaked open as Rhett walked in, and his gaze narrowed on the journal in my lap. Two dark red horns slithered out of his skull as he clenched his jaw.
I placed the journal back on the nightstand and jolted up off the bed, crossing the distance to him and wringing my hands. “It’s not what it looks like! I just saw the journal, and there was like this pull to it so I grabbed it. I opened it mid-way and saw my name, but that’s all I saw before I realized it was private and shut it. I’m so sorry for invading your privacy like that. It wasn’t okay.”
He opened and closed his fists at his side before stepping inside. A dark red tail whipped the door shut from behind him as his toes met mine. Pheromones poured out of him and slid over my skin like the flow of electricity coursing through wires.
My back arched, pushing my chest into his abdomen, and I tilted my head back to meet his heated gaze.
“I—Rhett,” I moaned as another onslaught of pheromones seeped into my skin, adding to the slick heat between my legs.
“You didn’t read anything but your name?” His tail wrapped around my thigh, and his hands settled on my hips and pressed me into his body.
My heart hammered in my chest as desire filled my mind like a static I didn’t want to stop. I couldn’t even focus on the words coming out of his mouth. I needed him. Badly. So badly. Little tears of frustration filled the corners of my eyes. “Please.”
“Baby, I need you to answer me,” he murmured, slipping his fingers under the waistband of my skirt and digging them into my flesh. His fingers were like lightning bolts. I shook with need for him, needing to have his bare skin against mine.
Rhett wretched himself away from my body, leaving every area he was touching cold as his back slammed against the door.
His pheromones sucked away from me, and my veins felt like sludge as my heart rate slowed back to normal. The wetness between my legs stayed, but my brain was less fogged.
I stumbled back until the back of my legs hit the bed, and I fell onto it. “I’m sorry,” I gasped.
Fear swirled in his gaze as his mouth set into a hard line. “No, baby, I’m sorry. I lost control of my pheromones again. Fuck. You aren’t safe with me.”
His demon form made him more attractive, but I tried not to look at his horns and tail. This was serious. He’d caught me with his private journal. I shouldn’t have grabbed it, and that was my mistake. I forced my hands through my wet hair. “Rhett, I’m perfectly safe with you. You’re my mate, and as your mate, I owe you an apology. I shouldn’t have touched your journal. I’m sorry.”
His shoulders were bunched up, but he stepped away from the door and approached me with cautious steps. “What did you read?”
