Wren shifted her gaze in front of her, and I frowned. Did she really think I’d call on her to do something she didn’t want to do?
“I’ll do it!” a student jumped out of her seat and scurried down the walkway until she stood in front of my desk.
She had brown curly hair that went to her shoulders and calculating green eyes. Emerald birthstone.
“Okay, Emerald, what’s your species and power?”
“I’m Eve.” She smiled brightly, and I could see Wren’s glare on this girl from my peripheral. “And I’m a reptile shifter. Chameleon, to be exact. My power is that I can implant my thoughts into someone’s head.”
Can you hear me?Her feminine voice rang through my head.
Her power is the exact opposite of Thorn’s, I thought.
Students often exhibited the same powers, but mind reading and planting thoughts were two very uncommon powers.
I poured a small bit of my essence into the crystal, and I focused on the student in front of me until a small strand of light seeped from the crystal and into the center of her forehead.
The girl blinked a few times before stumbling forward and catching herself on the edge of my desk. A small growl emitted from Wren, and I snapped my gaze to her. Thorn had her tucked into his side, and she snuggled closer to him as she glared daggers at the girl.
She was jealous. I’d never seen her jealous of anyone except Fallon, but she had a good reason to be possessive of us over that vampire.
A sharp gasp made my gaze flick back to the girl, and I removed my finger from the crystal.
Emerald girl had dark circles under her eyes, and her complexion had turned pale.
“That was only thirty seconds,” I spoke to the class. “Magical energy drains a supernatural. As you know, magical energy is tied to our life force. Now, this crystal cannot kill a supernatural, but it can weaken them and put them in a great position to be killed. Emerald, please try to shift.”
The girl blinked slowly before scales started to scatter across her face, but then they stopped. “I can’t,” she croaked.
“Another emerald, please come help your classmate grab her things and make sure she gets to her next class. She’ll feel better in a few hours but won’t recover completely for twenty-four hours, give or take. Class dismissed.” I grabbed the crystal and put it back inside my desk.
The rustle of bags and papers sounded as everyone started gathering their belongings and leaving the room.
Emerald girl was staring at me with furrowed brows, and I could only assume she was attempting her other power but was unable to do so. A male student came up behind her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders and led her out of the class with the rest of the students.
Wren and Thorn got up and walked over to my desk.
I walked away to shut the door to the room before turning and narrowing my gaze at Thorn. “Tell me more about that crystal,” I said.
“You two were communicating by Thorn’s power. Weren’t you?” Wren crossed her arms, and she looked at me with something else behind her eyes. “And I’m pretty sure Eve likes you.”
“Well,Ilikeyou.” I prowled forward, closing the distance and grabbing her chin with my index finger and thumb before bending down and capturing her lips with mine. Her lips melted into mine, and I grabbed the back of her ass to pull her closer.
Thorn cleared his throat as a flash of ice hit me in the back, and I pulled away with a groan.
“Really?”
“We’re meeting up with Lachlan and Kian for brunch after this, and I’d rather not go with a painful erection from all of Wren’s dirty thoughts,” he said, brushing his hair back out of his face. “Besides, I thought you wanted to know about the hailtz crystal.”
My blood ran cold. “The hailtz crystal?”
He nodded. “It’s a myth in Kalista, but in the fae realm, it’s very real. Each element has a form of it. The Ice Kingdom’s is the hailtz crystal.”
“Can you get one?”
Thorn’s face darkened, and Wren moved closer to him. “My parents have been debating on sending a team to get the crystal for a few years now to use against the Fire Kingdom, but they haven’t because there’s a treaty between all four kingdoms not to use our crystals against any of the other elemental kingdoms.”
“Do you know where it is?” I rubbed my jaw, the permanent five-o’clock-shadow pricking my palm.
