Rowan’s spicy ember scent hit my senses as the door clicked shut behind me. Flaming eyes met mine over the piles of folders and papers on his desk, and he smirked. “You always seem to find me when I need you most.”

His need for me, emotionally and physically, throbbed through the bond. “What’s wrong?”

“What’s not?” He groaned, squeezing the crystal sphere in his palm. It was swirling with flames, and his brows pinched together. “I just had a visit from a Supernatural Council member. I’ve been put in charge of gaining allies for our side. The dragons are a nightmare. The humans are infiltrating places they should never have access to…” Smoke poured out of his nostrils as they flared.

I rounded his desk and slipped onto his lap, plucking the sphere from his hand. It was hot, and I frowned as I placed it on his desk. “You’re taking on too much.”

His hands went to my thighs. “I don’t have a choice.”

“Maybe not.” I plunged my fingers into his long red hair. “But you need a break.”

“I don’t have time for a break, fledgling.” His grip on my thighs tightened, heating my body. “Norman’s been experimenting on the specimen, and he’s found some irregularities. He’s assuming it’s due to it being reanimated. The dragons may have started this war, but I think the humans were already a few steps ahead.”

A chill zipped down my spine, and fear slammed through our bond. He dipped his head into the nape of my neck to press a kiss. “I’m sorry,” I gasped.

“Don’t be sorry. I didn’t mean to bring it up to you.” He kissed down to my collarbone before leaning back. “Have you talked to Rhett about what happened?”

I nodded, swallowing hard.

“Good. If you want to talk about what happened, you can talk to me too.”

My heart swelled. “I know.”

“Not now?”

“No. Not now.” I shook my head, watching the flames dance in his eyes. “Have you heard anything back from Alice?”

”No, I haven’t.” He frowned, and my blood ran cold. “I have sent a couple of follow-up letters, but I haven’t received anything back.” He frowned, his arm darting around me and gathering a paper and pen. “I can send another. This time I’ll address it to the Alpha.”

I had attempted so many letters. If only the Arctic Wolf Village had tablets or some form of technology, but they were stuck in the older times. It was hard not to think the worst about Alice. After they expelled Grayson, who knew what he could’ve done to her?

Was she ignoring my letters? Did she blame me for what Grayson had done to her? I couldn’t exactly blame her if she did. I had been the reason he was provoked. Did he hurt her? Lock her up somewhere? Were they just not giving her the letters? Did something even worse happen to her?

No.I couldn’t think like that. Not now. Not when I couldn’t do anything about it. Maybe she was just busy and hadn’t replied yet.

I grabbed his arm, forcing the worry out of my mind. “Rowan, please. You need to take a break from work.”

“I can’t.” He gritted the words out.

“Youcan.” I pushed his arm back and put his hand back on my thigh, and heat uncurled in my lower abdomen. “And you will.”

A smirk grew on his lips, and his heated gaze dragged down my body and back up again. “Will I?”

I nodded, trying my best to look stern. “Yes.”

He tilted his head back and barked out a laugh. “You know, I have a bit of a… control problem. The thought of someone else telling me to do something is infuriating.”

“Infuriating?” I slipped off his lap and pulled him to his feet by his wrists. “How so?”

“I can and will think for myself, but with you…” He licked his bottom lip, and heat radiated off him. “With my mate, I see that your command comes from a loving place.”

Excitement thrummed through me. “Of course it does.”

I turned and bolted through the door to his room and catapulted myself onto the bed. I was only able to take in a small breath before his body had mine pinned against the mattress, my wrists caught in his large hands. The sweltering heat of his magic seeped into my body, and I whimpered as need flooded the bond.

“When did you get so assertive?” His voice rumbled in my ear.

“When I realized you needed it.” I gasped as he started grinding his hard length into my backside.
