The anger raging inside me dimmed at the mention of the shifter’s name, and the smoke stopped and scales calmed. I pulled my hands from my desk before punching the bottom of it and fixing the dents.

Walking over to the magical sphere on the floor, I grabbed it and let it calm my magic. “What about her?”

“Did saying her name seriously just calm you down?”

“What about her? Give me the updates of your session.”

He let out a low whistle, and I could hear the shuffling of papers as he went through them. “Wren’s either the kindest being in Kalista, or she’s hiding something. Let me see here…”

What could she possibly be hiding? Rhett had trust issues the same as I did, but his were more stubborn.

“You tend to think the worst of everyone.”

“I’m usually right,” he muttered before clearing his throat. “Anyway, I talked to Finch about Wren because she excels at anything herb-related, but especially with healing.”

“Really? How do you know that?”

“She healed my wing in my bat form.”

“She did?”

“Yeah.” He coughed, and a strange warmth filled my veins that wasn’t related to anger for once. “I talked with Vicki about her, but she seemed to only have complaints.” His tone turned sour.

“Vicki has complaints about everyone.” I snorted.

“Well, apparently, Alister has shown interest in Wren, and that pissed her off. At least that’s what he says,” Rhett explained, and I rolled my eyes.

“Vicki is interested in every male staff member, as well as some students.”

“She’s relentless. Still don’t know why you haven’t fired her.”

“I technically did. It’s her last year. I had to give her notice to make it legal.”

I’d given Vicki her heads up a few weeks ago that this would be her last year at Fate Hollow. She’d been receiving countless complaints about her advances. She hadn’t actually touched anyone yet, otherwise, I would’ve fired her on the spot, but the vampire was a menace. She’d even had a go at me, but I spit fire at her and that seemed to stop it.

“She’s still annoying and unprofessional. I heard she’s picking on Wren in class too.”

My magic flared again, and the ball almost fell out of my hand, but I tightened my grip. “You said she’s good at Herbology, right? Let’s just exempt her from Herbology Theory and put her in Practical with Hendrix.”

“On it, boss.” I heard the tapping on his tablet, and relief swept through me. The less Wren had to be around Vicki, the better. “Also, I found out something pretty upsetting.”

“What?”

He hesitated. “Wren was rejected by her mate and banished from her village.”

“What?” I growled. “By who?”

“A student here, actually. Grayson Haven.” He paused. “I actually heard him speaking with her. The bastard is relentless. Damien already cut off his pinky finger, but he still approached her in the forest.”

“The forest? Why was she in the forest?” My throat tightened. That was where we were finding the attacked students.

“She’s a fox shifter. Arctic or not, she needs the forest to soothe that side of her,” he reminded me. “That’s where I injured my wing. I flew into the punk’s face because he went to grab her.”

“Grab her?” I sneered.

“Yeah. Lachlan Agnello came up and punched him. He left right after.”

“Shit.” I heaved a sigh and ran a hand through my hair. “She’s still bonded to him?”
