I overloaded Lynn’s body with pheromones and she died.
I killed her.
It was how I went from being adored to feared. When everyone turned their backs on me, Rowan had found me and offered me a job as a counselor.
I’d been working at Fate Hollow Academy for a couple of years, and I had to admit, focusing on others' emotional trauma made me feel better about my own. Rowan was the first person other than Eevie to ever give a shit about me, and I owed that firedrake my life.
I knew firsthand that the world was full of evil, and women were the cause of a lot of it from my experience.
I’d never thought to describe any woman as innocent, but...
I ran my hands over my face before standing up from my desk.
“Don’t go there,” I muttered bitterly to myself.
The shifter, Wren, did seem innocent. She was petite, a mere wisp of a woman. Her face when my pheromones filled that room was blissful fucking ignorance. There weren’t many ignorant to the ways of sex, but from her reaction, it seemed as though she was.
And that was a fucking conundrum. I fed off sex, so I’d been aware of it from a very young age. That woman was twenty-two and her arousal smelled divine.
Thinking about it, maybe she wasn’t authentic. She could’ve been playing a role to get guys interested. A lot of men loved the innocent act. Damien was already obsessed with her.
I’d bet a little thing like her would be a great meal.
I tilted my head, contemplating it before sitting back down in the swivel chair and snatching up my tablet to message her.
To: Wren Clearwater
From: Rhett Everhart
Subject: Schedule a Session
Good evening, Wren.
I wanted to reach out and let you know you and I are required to have a session or two per the headmaster’s request. I’m supposed to hold a “check in” session with each student to chat about their transition at the academy.
Message me back with the times you’re free. I’ll be looking forward to your reply. If you ever need to talk, I’m only a call away. I’m usually always at my office on campus as well.
See you soon.
Send.
My stomach churned.
“I was right, wasn’t I?” Damien popped out of my shadows with a smug grin on his face, and I rolled my eyes as I shut down the tablet and stared blankly at him.
“Wren. She’s special,” he went on with a goofy ass smile on his face.
A smile I hadn’t seen on the particular shadow demon since before he got himself captured. It was strange, but it also wasn’t my business.
I shrugged. “She seems ignorant to a lot of things.”
“She knows little to nothing outside of her own species and Herbology,” he admitted, running a hand through his hair. “But fuck! Teaching her all the different shit has been so fun. She sees the world like it’s a new shiny object.”
“To her, I guess it is.” I’d read her file. She was isolated, and the Arctic Wolf Village wasn’t exactly well off.
“Yeah.” He collapsed into the chair with a dreamy sigh. “She’s fucking perfect. She kissed me, you know.”
Thinking of her lips on his sent a jolt of jealousy down my spine but I clenched my jaw. “She did?”
