I straightened up, but Kian and Trixie didn’t seem to notice he was there, so I didn’t say anything about it.
“I’m sorry about earlier, Kian. It wasn’t cool to joke about the conjuring stuff.” Trixie kicked at the carpet.
Kian’s eyes widened, and a smile formed on his lips. “Thanks. Nobody has ever apologized before.”
“Thank the little fox here.” She jerked her head toward me. “She told me it seemed to have bothered you. I poke fun at people I like. That’s just how I am. I don’t mean it in a mean way.”
My breath caught as he directed his smile at me. Dimples blessed each cheek. “You noticed?”
“Yeah.” I stood, slinging the strap of my bag over my shoulder and trying to will my heartbeat to slow.
“Thanks. I mean it. Nobody has really ever noticed things like that about me. Except Lachlan. It’s kind of nice.”
“Of course.”
Our gazes were locked, and a magnetic charge seemed to pulse between us. Magic was prevalent in our world, but it was palpable around Kian.
“Come on, lovebirds, break it up.” Trixie clapped her hands, snapping me out of the daze as Kian blinked a couple of times.
“We aren’t lovebirds,” he sputtered, his face turning red.
“Mylittle bird,” Damien sang out, and a hand landed on my waist. “How sweet is your pain?”
“My pain?” I turned to see him barely visible from his shadows as he held onto me.
“From pain comes strength. From the small taste I’ve had, yours is delicious.”
Kian’s blush drained from his face as he blanched and turned to grab his tablet from his backpack.
“How romantic.” Trixie chuckled as she rolled her eyes. “Come on, we don’t want to be late to our first class.”
“Itwasromantic, actually.” I bit down on my bottom lip to stop the smile from showing on my face as Damien smirked.
Triumph enveloped his face as his eyes flicked passively toward Trixie. “See, she thinks I’mromantic.”
“Ifromanticmeanspsychotic, then sure.” She smiled sweetly at him before looping her arm through mine. “Have a good first day, boys.”
“Some women love psychotic,” Damien told her as we walked toward the door. “Just ask my little bird.”
“Should I be more psychotic?” Kian asked Damien in a timid voice. “Would she like me more then?”
“She likes you the way you are, necromancer,” Damien said, before pausing. “But since you’re asking, could you bring back to life someone I’ve tortured to death so I can kill them again?”
The door slammed shut behind us, and Trixie snorted. “What have you gotten yourself into?”
I shrugged, staring at the door beside ours.
Would Thorn meet up with me today? Did he have this class with us? I wanted to know, but I didn’t want to knock. Not when I knew Grayson lived with him.
“Wren?”
Shaking my head, I plastered on a smile. “Sorry, what was that?”
“Let’s just get to class.”
The village back in Briesia never had higher learning past what they’d considered necessary, and I’d never been to an academy. Alice had homeschooled me per order of the Alpha, so I didn’t have any idea what to expect.
It was exciting having so much knowledge readily available.
