His poker face faltered before he pursed his lips and grabbed the file from his desk. “She’s a student, and I want to make sure she’s doing okay. That’s all.” A bead of sweat swelled up on his temple.
“You’re a sex demon, dude. Have you even seen a photo of her?”
He shook his head. “No. I’ve only heard of her. Which is why I’m telling you, the interest isn’t personal.”
“So why have you read up on her so much?”
“She’s a student I need to meet with to gauge how she’s adjusting.”
“Your job isn’t to research into your student’s matebonds. Is it?”
“I don’t fucking know, okay? Something about her situation interests me. I would like to meet her. That’s it.”
A dark chuckle rumbled out of me as I leaned forward over his desk. “When you meet her, you’ll see how fucking breathtaking she is. Then your incubus nature will really want to come out.”
He let out a shaky breath, still holding onto her folder like it was a lifeline. “I’ve never met any woman intriguing enough to be of any romantic interest to me.”
“You haven’t met Wren.” I winked, stepping back into the shadows and leaving him to his own jumbled thoughts.
Rhett used to be one of the most esteemed demons in the Demon Capital, and since I was demon nobility, we had run into each other from time to time. He was a withdrawn bastard most of the time, but he didn’t put up a front which I found refreshing.
I shadowed across campus with every intent of going to spy on Wren when I noticed a fae with flaming red hair speaking into the bonfire built next to the dormitory.
“He’s here, and there’s a woman he seems protective of. I’m sure she could be used against him,” he hissed into the flames.
Whatever was speaking to him wasn’t audible to anyone but him because I couldn’t hear a thing. That or I wasn’t close enough.
“No! I said I can handle it. You don’t need to sendher.” He paused, listening as the crackle of the fire popped a few times. “I will. I’ll be in touch.”
He waved his hand over the fire pit, and the flames whooshed away. The fire fae had a secret.
I tabbed that in the back of my mind for later. Gaining collateral was the best way to ensure manipulation when need be. I never knew when someone would become an enemy.
I wasn’t wary of Wren, though. She was far too kind to be an enemy. Even if she wanted to become my enemy, I wouldn’t allow it. She was mine, whether she knew it or not.
Making others scream in agony was hilarious. The way they’d beg for torture to stop fed my magic reserves. But withher,I wanted to make her scream in pleasure. I wanted her to beg me for more.
My little bird was already driving me insane.
FIVE
Wren
Awarenessprickedatmyskin as I cracked my eyes open to peer into the dim room.
Blinking, my eyes adjusted to the golden light that slipped through the cracks between the blinds and bathed the area. My gaze caught on a figure in the corner next to my shut door, and my heart leapt to my throat. Fear riddled through me before I realized who it was.
Damien stood shrouded in darkness with his now glinting silver eyes trained on me. His gaze burned with such intensity, my soul shivered. It was as if his irises glowed when he absorbed negative energy, and after the dream I’d just had, it was no wonder he was feeding off me.
Obsidian shadows clung to his body, wisping around as if they were trying to make him a shadow himself.
With my heart thumping wildly against my breastbone, I jolted up, my hand missing the mattress, making me tumble to the ground and smack my head against the floor. An audible crack was followed by pain that rippled through my skull.
“Ow,” I whimpered.
Damien was by my side a second later, moving me back to my bed and cupping the top of my head that stung from the senseless blow.
The sharp pain faded quickly, almost as if he healed it, but he didn’t move away—and I became very aware of how close he was in proximity.
