“Tonight is a full moon,” she whispered. “We’ll sneak out tonight.”
If the bond to Grayson could be broken, I wouldn’t have to look over my shoulder or deal with the soul crippling pain a rejected mate caused.
And that sounded astounding.
“Are you sure Damien won’t wake up and follow?” I asked as we moved away from the Fated Dormitory and toward the summoning circle in the middle of campus.
The air was colder at night, and I had put on a pair of black shorts and one of Damien’s shirts he insisted I wore. The cold wind breezed over exposed skin and I sighed in ecstasy. Sometimes I missed the arctic climate, but the living conditions were better here.
“He fell asleep cuddled up to you. I’d say we have at least an hour before he notices,” she said as we passed the Natatorium.
“Damien wakes up at least every ten minutes to check on me.” The red glow from the circle was visible in the darkness of the night.
“No wonder you started sleeping in his bed,” she muttered, and I laughed.
That was exactly why I started.
Pain rippled through my shoulder muscle as someone clamped down on my wrist and yanked me backward. The snap of my bone cracking under the pressure rang out. “Ow!”
Trixie whirled around, and her eyes widened. She threw her hands in front of her and started spitting incantations at whoever had me. I was thrown to the side roughly, and my body smacked hard into the ground.
Pain lanced through my side, and I glanced back just in time to see a man being thrown up into the air and skyrocketed toward the other side of the Natatorium. He hit the water with a splash, and I pulled in a lungful of air.
I couldn’t hear the movement of water signaling he was swimming, but I didn’t care.
Trixie dropped to my side and rifled through my bag to pull out the healing salve she’d helped me make.
“Where’s it hurt the most?”
“Wrist, shoulder, and my entire left side,” I rasped, flipping onto my back as the throbbing continued.
She smeared it into my skin where I’d told her, making sure it soaked in.
Magic fizzled as it healed the muscles in my shoulder, bone in my wrist, and whatever had caused the throbbing in my side. I gasped for another breath as the pain finally faded. “What the hell was that?”
“Whothe hell was that,” she corrected, scrunching her nose up. “I think it was some drunk student. Maybe he was high on a drug. I don’t know, but we probably need to speed this up.” She looked as she helped me to my feet, and we sped up our pace.
“I’m not arguing with that,” I muttered as we approached the circle made of red crystals and gray stone with red glowing magic etched in to make it a powerful circle for those who could wield magic.
That was weird, and I wasn’t sure why we’d get attacked randomly on campus, but right now, all I cared about was breaking the bond between Grayson and me.
Trixie took my hand and had me stand in the middle of the circle before she stepped on one of the smaller circles surrounding it. “This is about you, so you need to be centered.”
“What do I need to do?” Nerves came alive on my skin, and I locked my fingers together.
“Just answer honestly.”
“Answer what?”
She smiled before closing her eyes and stretching her hands out. The crystals began to glow brighter as she started to chant.
“Did Grayson reject you first?” she asked in a powerful tone that didn’t sound all the way like her.
“Yes.”
“Did you reject him back?”
“Yes.”
