“Wren Clearwater and Kian Cortse,” a feminine voice rang out in the room, and white eyes with no pupil glowed within the shadow of the hood. “I’m Blair, the seer at the academy.”

“Seer.” Kian stood up and bowed at his waist. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

I hesitated, not knowing if I should bow or not. I remembered Alister saying not to hang my head for anyone in the academy, but Kian seemed to highly respect her.

“You too, Kian.” Her voice sounded all-knowing. “We will be seeing a lot more of each other, young necromancer. Especially due to your power. You are stronger than you know, but today, I’m here for Wren.”

Kian straightened and glanced at me.

“For me?” Surprise wracked through me. “Did I do something wrong?”

A light mirth broke from her before she shook her head. “No, Wren. You’re actually a big piece of what’s right in the upcoming war.”

“War?” My heart froze. “What war?”

“With humans?” Kian asked in a low voice.

“Yes.”

“How could I possibly help with the war?”

“Alister told you what I’d told him in confidence about your powers.” She made a scoffing noise. “You’re his soft spot but also a soft spot for many other powerful supernaturals. Your power will come when you’re ready for it—much like your mates.” Her gaze flicked to Kian. “And you need to place your worries aside to be there for Wren when it gets hard.”

“I’ll always be there for Wren,” he told her, and my heart warmed.

“You must,” she said in a stern voice before sweeping her gaze back to me. “And you must have confidence in yourself and your mates. Keep your heart open. Don’t let the past ruin your present.”

I nodded, hanging on to every word. “Okay.”

She turned and left the room, shutting the door on her way out without saying another word.

Kian and I turned to each other, and he stepped forward to embrace me.

If war was truly coming, what power could I possibly have that could help tip the odds in our favor?

TWENTY-NINE

Wren

“I’msorry, what?”Trixie’svoice raised a few octaves in the library, and I ducked my head as I ignored the stares from others around the library.

“Shh!”

She waved me off. “I knew Damien ate you out, but I didn’t know he made you come with his shadows. And Alister bit you? And then kissed you?Babe! That’s so hot! I'm so proud of you.” She wiped a fake tear from her eye. “My best friend is growing up.”

“Trixie,” I hissed. “You don’t have to be so loud.”

“We’re in a library of supernaturals. The majority of them have enhanced hearing. If someone was curious about what we’re talking about, they’d know.” She gave me a look before grinning. “So, how do you feel about them?”

My pulse sped up, and I grabbed the iced drink in front of me and took a few sips. “Damien’s addictive, but he’s more than that. I’m a bit…” I paused, trying to think of a word.

“Obsessed?”

“Yeah, honestly.”And I was.If Damien didn’t show for more than an hour, I’d worry about him. “And then Alister makes my heart beat fast and makes me feel desired.”

“For more than just your blood?” she joked.

“So much more.” I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear as I set down my drink. “And then there’s Lachlan. He makes me feel safe, and he makes me want to be playful.”
