“How was Thaddeus afterwards? I haven’t talked to him yet. I think he’s avoiding me again.”
He’d been taking a lot of guard shifts at the gate with Brann and Oren. I’d been curious about how that was going and how he was adjusting, but every time I went to ask, he’d shoot me the meanest fucking look.
“He’ll come around. You know Thaddeus. He’s always in his head and acts brash. He can be a real knob sometimes.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” I murmured.
“And Lilith?”
“Hmm?” My eyelids were heavy.
His heart thumped hard against his chest. “I love you too.”
SEVEN
My skin burned under the black flames that teleported me into my office where Thaddeus was buried in paperwork.
Blaise and Kai were guarding the gate while Aziel was checking in with Priamos and Mortala.
I stood in front of the desk, tapping my foot against the soft clay. “You know Baylor can do that.”
As he picked his head up to look at me, I caught a whiff of coffee beans. I bit back a small moan as I remembered how good that smell was sinking into my skin.
“I want to make sure he doesn't miss anything. He already went over these.” He gestured to the scattered papers all over the desk.
“You don’t have to do that. I created Baylor to pay attention to detail. You can trust him, he’s part of me.” I ran my fingers over the roughness of the wooden desk.
His brows drew together in a thoughtful expression. “What does that mean? A part of you…”
“It means exactly that. Baylor is a part of me. I made him from my life essence.”
His jaw tightened. “Doesn’t that put you at risk, love?”
I shook my head, butterflies fluttering in my stomach from his use of the nickname for me again. “My life essence is infinite. That’s how my father created my soul.”
He grunted a reply and started shuffling through the papers again.
I huffed, stomping my foot like a teenager. “Could you stop being boring for one second?”
His gaze snapped to mine, and his tongue darted out to wet his bottom lip. “You didn’t think I was boring when you were crying out underneath me.”
Heat pooled between my legs at the thought. “Well, you weren’t boring then. Right now, you are.” I slid my hand toward his and grabbed it. “You can easily remedy that by fucking me on this desk.”
He jerked his hand back, but his eyes darkened. “There’s too much to do to get sidetracked.”
I rounded the desk and leaned in, brushing my nose against his. “Do I make you nervous?”
He reeled back. “Don’t be daft, of course not.”
I sighed, straightening up. “Then why won’t you talk to me?”
“I told you,” he snapped. “There’s a lot to do.”
I shot him a scathing look. “You’re wasting time going over anything Baylor already has. Do something productive.”
“And what do you suggest? Fucking you again? Wasn’t Kai enough last night, or do you bloody well need more?”
I flinched at his words, turning on my heels. My hair fanned around me from the speed, and I walked my ass away from him.
