“What accident?” He pulled me into his bare chest and rubbed my back. “Lil, are you okay?”

“Don’t call me Lil. You know I prefer Lilith.” I rolled my eyes, the silly dispute rolling off my tongue from habit. “What do you mean what accident? The accident I…” The words fell flat on my tongue as I sifted through my memories. I couldn’t even recall an accident.

What the fuck am I talking about?

He pulled back and stared at me with his big brown eyes. “Babe, maybe we should have your mom look you over?”

Biting my lip, I nodded. “Yeah. You’re probably right. Fuck. I think I’m forgetting something.”

“Did you have plans with Emma tonight?” he asked as we made our way out of the forest and toward his car.

“Emma?”

“Yeah. Your work friend?” He opened the door for me, looking me up and down with a baffled expression as I slid in. “I think you had plans to stay at her place.”

My short, blonde friend with honey-colored eyes popped into my mind as I remembered the conversation at work yesterday.

“Hey babe,” Emma greeted me as she slid in behind me to grab a couple of empty vials and a tourniquet.

“Still on for tomorrow night?” I asked her as I disposed of a needle in the waste container I had used to draw blood.

“As long as you don’t get caught up with that boyfriend of yours again.” She giggled, turning her plump frame toward me as her freckle-dusted nose crinkled.

“Corbin’s cute, but we haven’t spent time together in a while outside of work. I’ll see you tomorrow night. I’ll take the back roads like always.”

Sound warped back into me as I blinked and saw Corbin leaned over the center console with his hands cupping my cheeks.

“Lil? Lil?Lilith?”

“What?” I jerked back out of his hold. For some reason, his touch made me recoil and allowed despair to creep in. “I remember now. I’m sorry. I feel so out of it today.”

“Yeah. Maybe you should cancel and stay home. I’ll stay over if you want.”

“Yeah.” I glanced out the window as he put the car in drive and whipped onto the road toward my house.

Anxiety bubbled over, and my nerves were frayed. I’d felt like I’d forgot something serious, but I couldn’t remember a damn thing.

I huffed out a frustrated sigh and smacked a lock of my light auburn hair out of my face as I grabbed my phone from the cup holder.

I stared at the passcode pop up on my screen and wracked my mind. “What’s my passcode again?”

Corbin gave me a side glance as we pulled into the driveway. “We don’t share that with each other, remember? Trust is imperative in a relationship.”

I snorted. “Your psychologist is showing again.”

He bent forward and kissed my cheek. “Isn’t that what you love about me?”

My stomach dropped.This isn’t right.

We went inside and found Dean and Hunter playing video games on the flat screen in the living room.

Mom wasn’t home yet, so I left Corbin downstairs with my brothers and went up into my room to lay down.

“Meow!” Jax jumped up on the bed and laid down.

His presence sent a shockwave through me, and I went to touch my pendant, but my fingertips grazed my skin instead. I patted my neck to realize my necklace was gone.

I rushed back down the stairs, skipping two steps at a time. “Where the fuck is my necklace?”
