His lips thinned into a line. “Tomorrow’s the full moon. Polish all your skills because tomorrow you must demonstrate them.”

Rolling my eyes, I sighed. “I know. I’ve been practicing. You can go now.”

Blaise appeared next to him, and my traitor heart thumped. The bastard noticed and smirked at me.

I tore my gaze away. “Go do whatever it is you’ve been doing.”

Kai stood beside them with his brows knitted. “Not going to ask what we’re hunting?”

“Would you tell me if I asked?”

“Doesn’t matter since you’re not coming,” Thaddeus answered for them, and the other two sighed.

My throat tightened. “Well, go on. Evil to obliterate, people to save...Yada yada yada!”

They shared a cautious look.

“I’m going to practice my skills. Don’t fucking worry,” I said in a huff.

They seemed to pick and choose when they wanted to be concerned about me, and it pissed me off. I narrowed my glare at Thaddeus, who nodded and left the room. Irritation rose over my skin as Blaise and Kai hesitated.

“We’ll tell you everything soon,” Kai murmured before they zipped out of the room.

Yeah right.

The front door shut, and I bolted out of bed to the window in time to see the blur of their bodies rush away as they used their vampire speed to break off into the forest.

The guys were gone for the night, which meant my plan could commence.

Being alone was draining, and it was fucking torture having someone you trust hide something from you and treat you like the plague.

Tomorrow’s likely my death day. I can’t let myself be obliterated without giving my family closure.

Pulling the silky strands of hair up into a ponytail, I prepared myself for the great escape of the Draven clan—at least until morning—and they’d never have to know.

I stood outside the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Cape Cod home, perched on an acre of flat land with no close neighbors. The acrid scent of fresh paint hit my nostrils, making my eyes burn. The front door sported a bright yellow color, much different than the dark brown I’d become accustomed to. Had they moved on? The door had never changed color before, it was like the house wasn't the same.

My fist came millimeters away from the door several times as I kept talking myself out of knocking.

Distinct chatter and the heartbeats of five beings inside came through the door, and I let out a strained breath. I recognized everyone there—Mom, Dean, Hunter, Corbin, and Jax.

And for some reason, I couldn’t put on my big girl panties and fucking knock.

Maybe Thaddeus is right. Maybe it’s too soon.

I shook my head.No. They’re my family. Thaddeus is wrong.

It would never be too soon. If anything, it wasn’t soon enough. I’d been gone almost two months.

I’m five miles out. I can be back at the manor by four AM. They’d been coming home by seven each morning, so it gave me some leeway.

Before I chickened out, I hit the wood of the door twice and jerked my hand away. It took a lot of effort to force myself to stand in place and not turn and book it out of there like hell on heels.

The door swung open and revealed Hunter. Mom’s famous brownie-smell rolled out the door and slid over my skin like a warm blanket. That house always smelt the same.

Hunter’s black hair was longer than I remembered, and his blue eyes were the same color mine used to be before I was turned.

His head tilted to the side as we stood there, staring at each other like idiots.
