Shutting the door behind me, I flopped onto the bed, burying my face in a pillow. I was equal parts upset with Wren for telling her dad about my past and upset with myself for fleeing like a wounded pup.
Plus, thinking about my brother was a reality check that moving here wasn't permanent. I never expected to develop feelings for people.
There was a soft knock on the door, and I didn't even need to ask who it was. Sighing, I muttered for her to come in. The door opened, bringing her scent into the room.
The bed dipped and she lay down next to me, her fingers brushing across the scars on my back, drawing a shudder from my body. "I'm sorry, Sully. I didn't know he was going to bring it up in front of everyone."
I turned my head so I could see her face. "I would have told them the story eventually. There's too much other bullshit going on to talk or think about that right now. Why did you tell your dad?"
I knew exactly why she told him, and my heart was beating so hard that I could feel it in my ears. When Jonah had first been injured, we'd had hoped he'd heal himself, but that never happened. The thought of going through the torture of hopefulness again only to be let down made me feel sick to my stomach.
"He said he could do it." Her finger traced one of the jagged scars on my back, and I shivered, shutting my eyes. "And I can help him if he needs help."
"I don't believe you." My eyes burned, and I bit into my cheek to stop myself from crying.
"Believe it, son." I nearly jumped out of my skin at the masculine voice that came from right over us. Apollo was standing at the edge of the bed, staring at my back with a raised eyebrow. "It's a miracle you and your brother escaped. If only your pack would have reported the incident."
I sat up against the headboard, wrapping my arm around Wren's waist when she did the same. "What do you mean they didn't report it?"
"The coalition didn't know about it, which meant I didn't." He shrugged and went to the window that looked out to the front of the house, peeking through the blinds. "The question is, why is your oldpack hiding the fact there are dragons in their territory?"
"My old pack? What the hell are you talking about? And no one was hiding anything. There were rumors about a dragon, so I dragged my brother along with me to see. We saw, one of the dragons attacked, and when the pack leaders went back later, the dragons were gone."
"Of course they were. They shifted to their human forms more than likely." He turned around with a gleeful expression on his face. "You didn't think they were silly old dragons, did you?"
Wren sighed and squeezed my thigh. "The truth is, we don't really know much about dragons, but we can assume they shift based on them being hard to track down."
"Only fools go dragon hunting. And in a cave with two? One was most likely a child." Apollo sat down on the edge of the bed and met my shocked stare as I processed everything. "But none of that matters now. I'll heal your brother's spinal cord, but you four need to take care of the situation here while I go back and rest first."
"Can't you help us with the situation here too?" Wren sounded tired, and I wanted to pull her intomy lap and wrap my arms around her, but her father wouldn't appreciate having to see that.
"I wish I could, but I can't interfere with humans or thousands of lightning bolts will strike me dead for at least a millennium. Why do you think I have the coalition and Poseidon has the tritons?" He jumped to his feet and rubbed his hands together. "Who is up for a riveting game of steal the bacon?"
My eyes widened so far that it felt like my eyes were going to pop out of my skull. "Poseidon?"
Wren gave me a sheepish look before turning toward her dad. "I don't think that's a game that's very fair to the guys." Wren laughed but made no move to get up as Apollo walked toward the door. "Can you give us a few minutes? Don't make any more deals with my boyfriends or scare them, please."
He looked over his shoulder and winked before shutting the door and leaving us in silence. He was a quirky guy and not at all what I expected a Greek god to be like. I wondered if that was the norm for them all.
Holy shit. Was it real, or was Wren playing a sick joke on us?
I started to get up, and Wren straddled me, taking my face in her hands. "Don't be upset withme. If he can help your brother, it's worth a try, isn't it?"
Nodding, I grabbed her wrists and pulled her hands so they went around my neck. "I don't want to get my hopes up... or Jonah's. This is all…"
"Hard to believe. I know. Apollo is one of the more active gods of the bunch. I guess now I know why they aren't taking over the world."
"Tritons? Like mermen? What the fuck else is there?" I had never thought wolves were the only shifters, especially after running into the dragons, bears, and now a fox. "Why don't we all know about each other?"
Wren traced my collarbone and twisted her lips to the side in thought. "Can you imagine the fights that would break out? It's better this way."
She leaned forward, her hands on my chest, and kissed me softly. When she started to pull away, I grabbed the back of her head and brought her lips back to mine in a frantic kiss. It was the worst time possible to have a burning need like I did, but once my lips were on hers, I couldn't stop.
I pushed her back onto the bed and settled between her legs, kissing down her neck and running a hand under the shirt she had on. "What are the odds someone will come in here?"
"Doesn't matter." She arched her back as my thumb brushed underneath her breast. I bit her nipple through her shirt and she sucked in a sharp breath. "We need to be quick, though."
"Mm." I pushed her shirt up and sucked her nipple into my mouth. "You want me hard and fast?" I cupped her between her legs, and she squirmed, trying to create friction.
