Before he could respond, his phone went off. Whatever spell was over us vanished. Reality looked less soft and fuzzy around the edges. He let go of my hand to answer the phone. I entwined my fingers, trying to replace his warmth, to no avail.

“Nah, it’s cool,” Leo said to whoever was on the other side of the phone. He winked at me as he said, “I think she would prefer to stay in tonight but thanks for the invite.”

He spoke for a minute longer before finally hanging up.

“Your brother would like to meet you.” Leo laughed under his breath. “Whenever you’re ready.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Is he still…”

Leo nodded. “At the party, yeah. Don’t worry, he doesn’t suspect anything. It’s fine. We’re fine… right?”

“We’re fine,” I repeated as I ran my fingers over my pinky. I willed myself to believe it.
