“Scout’s honor,” he swore. “And just for the sake of turning a new leaf, and being open, I already know what’s on your list.”

My cheeks burned. “Seriously?”

“Yeah.” He shrugged with a grin. “I’m a way faster reader than you give me credit for.”

Shit. All my cards were laid out, clear for him to see. Thankfully, my dad’s timing was decent for once in my life. The side door opened, and he appeared with Nate trailing behind.

“So, did Leo pass your trial by fire?” Dad teased.

“I suppose.” I pushed off the wall, moving back to the desk because Nate was already eyeing me like I stole his dinner.

Dad nodded in approval like I had any other option. “Perfect. Welcome to Team Anderson, Leo.”

“Happy to be here, sir.” Leo smiled.

“Don’t speak too soon,” Nate warned with a grin. “You still have to make it through our trainer. They’re brutal.”

Leo’s eyebrows wrinkled. “Who’s that?”

Dad and Nate’s gaze directed towards me.

I held up a hand. “Very shocking turn of events, I know.”

“Jack of all trades,” Nate teased as he grabbed the keys for the truck.

“Master of none,” I finished in a low voice that no one but Leo seemed to hear.

“Mastery’s overrated,” he whispered as he passed me. He winked and turned to catch up with Nate in the driveway. I watched him, deciding then that working with him this summer could possibly be the best decision I could make. The closer we got, the more his appeal could fade. Because the key problem with liking someone from afar was romanticizing. And there was wish two for my summer:

Stop waiting around for Leo Reyes-Salgado.
