“Bye, guys,” I say, yelping as he smacks my butt. “Stop that.”
“I’m getting you nice and wet, so you’re ready when we get home.”
I give him a look.Like I’m not always ready for him.
We climb into his truck and start down the gravel road, a path I can now do in my sleep. It’s wild how easily I acclimated to Sugar Creek. Brooks says it’s because this is where I’m supposed to be, so of course it came easily. I don’t necessarily agree,but who am I to argue?The only sad point is Drew. He’s been absent from my life and I only have a small inkling why. Hopefully, he’ll come around one day, but given I’m starting to see how childish he can be, I won’t be holding my breath.
I watch the rows of trees slide past as we head to town, thinking about how much has changed. Sure, I have a boyfriend, and we’re going to build a house, and I’ve moved away from Nashville. But that’s not the change that astounds me. The change that makes me the happiest is one within myself.
I’m happy, and not because of all those things. I’m happy because I’m me. I finally figured out who I am and what I want. And, while I’m still a little too concerned with what other people think—old habits die hard—I care a whole lot less.
For the first time, I’m living my definition of happiness on my terms. It doesn’t hurt that it’s with him.
“Hey,” he says from the driver’s seat.
“Yeah?”
The spring sun sets behind him, catching the corner of his smile. “I love you.”
“I know,” I say and mean it. Even if he didn’t say it, I’d know. He shows me every day. “I love you, too.”
