Dee: Hey baby, what’s up?

Me: Haha, Blue. No, I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that I am heading out for the afternoon with Kyra.

Blue: Well I miss you.

Dee: Be safe.

Me: Blue, I always miss you guys when I’m not with you. But that was not the reason for the message.

Blue: Okay good! Have a good day! Be safe!

I smile at their messages, knowing that I am cared for in a way I haven’t been since my dad passed. I grab my bag, give Midnight a little treat and some scratches before running out of the apartment. Setting the alarm and then locking the door behind me.

I pull up outside of Kyra’s little trailer she shares with Mike, her dipshit fiancé. He has never given me the loving and thoughtful spouse vibes. He is more of a tool if you ask me, but I have to support my best friend in whatever decisions she makes. The douche himself is standing out on their little makeshift patio with a huge dip in his lip, spitting out into the lawn.Bleh.

He is roughly six feet tall, if he’s lucky. His beer belly is barely covered up by the stained and battered, Browning t-shirt. He tries so hard to grow a beard, but he is completely incapable. It is just a mess of patchy thin peach fuzz over his cheeks and jawline. I am honestly shocked that he isn’t already piss drunk this afternoon, at least not that I can tell.

“Kyra!” He hollers through the screen door. “Your friend is here.” Yeah, asshole, I am her friend, and I will remove you from her life one of these days. Of course, I can’t tell him that, but I know I will succeed one of these days.

I see her adorable blonde head come out of the house, clutching her purse to her body. When she sees my car, her face breaks into a shit-eating grin. I am so glad I can be a source of joy for her. She is the sunshine in the gloomy winters for me.

“Hey girl hey!” She says as she opens the door to my SUV.

“Hey Love.” I return her greeting, before putting the vehicle in reverse to get the fuck out of here before Mike changes his mind. The asshole was supposed to be gone, but he got suspicious she was up to no good, so he opted to stay home.

“So where are we off to?” She buckles her seat belt and turns to me.

“I figured we can go visit a couple of our favorite bookstores, grab some food and just spend time together.” I smile and pull out of the trailer park.

“Sooooo, tell me about these men.” She is too excited for her own good. If she could bounce out of her skin, she would. “You know you can’t leave me in the dark, tell me all the dirty details.”

“What do you want to know?” I laugh at her.

“Everything!”

“Fine, where to begin. So, as you know, they own Devil Dog Security. The city works with them when we have major events happening. I was stationed with them on the roof of Comerica during the playoff games. They are deliciously hot, and I swear could get me off with their commands. Kye, I have never wanted to be with guys who could be so bossy, but fuck, Demitri has me calling him Sir in the bedroom and it’s the hottest thing ever.”

“So are they good in bed?”

“Good isn’t the word to use, life changing would probably be better.” She starts to giggle, while clapping her hands in front of her face. I continue to tell her about how amazing my guys are while we drive to our first stop, Down Under Coffee.

We have procured our fuel for our little shopping day, and now we are walking down the street to this cute little romance bookstore. It is one I visit frequently because it is close to the apartment. I feel eyes on us while we are walking, but I cannot seem to catch whoever is watching us. I stay vigilant because I don’t want anything to happen to Kyra, but I also don’t want to make her worry.

Walking into the cute little shop, the owner greets us with a smile, and tells us that he just got a bunch of new books into the shop. Sipping our coffees, we wander the shelves just enjoying the peacefulness of a bookstore. We stop randomly picking up books, reading the backs, or just taking a moment to smell the pages.

“So are you guys just fucking?” Kyra asks randomly while she places a book back on the shelf.

“What the fuck, Kye? You can’t just ask me that randomly.” I laugh, turning to look at her.

“Well?”

“No, I don’t think we are just fucking. Graham took me on a date to this quaint little drive-in movie place last night, and I know Demitri has a date up his sleeve. He won’t tell me what it is, but neither would Graham before we went.”

“Oh, my goodness. That is so freaking adorable. You totally deserve guys who want to spoil the shit out of you. Do either of them have a brother?” She blushes and laughs. “Totally kidding by the way.”

“Uh huh, sure you're kidding. Honestly, I am not sure. I know Dee had a sister, something happened, but I am not sure.” Igrab a copy of “Check My Body, Grump” by Ariana St. Claire off the shelf, flipping it over and reading the back. Adding it to my basket of books I plan on purchasing. Who doesn’t love masked men chasing you through a haunted house? We finish up at the bookstore and head out to grab some food.

Pulling up at a small little Mexican joint up the road. I still can’t shake the feeling of being watched, but a couple of margaritas should solve that issue soon enough. We order some chicken tacos and a couple of mango margaritas. It is always so nice to get a little time with just me and her. It’s always so energizing because I do not have to worry about being on all the time. Kyra accepts me no matter what, and she is the one person in the world that I don’t fear her judgement.
