“The strongest thing you have, Roman. What’s in your briefcase, Saranna?”

She sat down and explained that’s where she kept all her backups and paperwork while I poured the drinks.

“Everything was gone through. My artwork was slashed, my couch turned over, my room totally destroyed. They emptied out my dresser and my closet. Hell, they went through all of my kitchen and still didn’t find it.”

Marcell sipped on the drink as he thought this over, then leaned forward.

“I have a crew looking into who this might be. But make no mistake, whoever it is, will know about Roman because they have to be close enough. Roman, you aren’t safe, so don’t underestimate them.”

“I won’t. I kind of figured it would be someone closer.”

“I don’t like this,” Marcell said, finally standing up. “I’m not even close to figuring it out, but it’s pissing me off. Threaten me, my crew, my men, but not my family, especially not the females.”

“I’m not a weakling, Marcell.”

“I didn’t say you were, Saranna. But it’s bullshit. We don’t do that in the families. Which makes me think it’s not them.”

I sat back on the couch, tossing that idea over in my mind. He wasn’t wrong, exactly, but if it meant Marcell lost a deal because Saranna wasn’t around, it wasn’t something I wouldn’t put past them. He had more faith in the mafia families than I did, but then again, my past had shown me enough that even family can’t be trusted when certain amounts of money are on the line.

“You believe you’re safe here?” Marcell asked, pulling me out of my thoughts and I nodded.

“You know my place. It would take a lot to get in, if they even found out where I lived.”

“And what happens if they do?” he asked, giving me a look.

“I’m not untraceable, but my security is pretty advanced. But, if they found a way around anything, then I would take her away.”

“Away where?”

I stood up, going toe to toe with the man.

“Away to a spot you wouldn’t even know.”

He licked his lips then glanced at Saranna who was watching us.

“You’d tell me if you were leaving?”

“I’d let you know she was safe, Marcell. Sometimes you not knowing all the details is best. Just trust in me to keep her safe and you won’t have to worry about it.”

He walked to the door then paused before turning to look at me. He poked my chest and lifted a brow.

“Just remember something, Roman.”

“Which is?”

“You are to protect her with everything you have, but in no way, ever, are you allowed to touch her.”

Chapter 5

Saranna

“How long are you going to keep me locked in this place?” I asked, looking up at him from my laptop, which he checked, by the way, to make sure there was no tracker on it.

“As long as I need to, why? Do you need something?” he asked, checking something on his phone. When I didn’t answer, he finally looked up, a brow raised as if that was to help me answer. But it wasn’t. In fact, that look only pissed me off.

“I need to go to the store.”

“What do you need? I can order it that way, it’s a lot safer.”
