He turned into the property and pulled up to the front porch of a lovely antique farmhouse. Before he could even get out, Tinker and Langly came racing around the barn, making a beeline for his vehicle.
He opened the door, and…
Two furballs barreled up and into his truck. One ended up sitting on his feet, and the other on his lap, while Trask had his face licked like it was a rare slab of beef.
Trask almost smiled.Almost.
He would have if he wasn’t so weirdly nervous.
It was nice, however, thatsomeonewas happy to see him.
“Okay, boys. Okay. Yes. I missed you, too.” He gave them hugs and scritches, but eventually gave them an order. “Down,” he commanded.
Both dogs complied immediately, jumping out, and with their tails still wagging to beat the band, Trask was able to exit his truck
Someone chuckled, off to his left.
Trask raised his eyes, and…
An older man, wreathed in smiles stood by the corner of the house.
“Randal DeLuca, I assume?” Trask speculated.
“That’s me. And how about I take a guess as to who you might be,” the man returned with a smirk. “Trask Sothard?”
Trask wanted to groan.
There was only one reason Randal would know his name. Jett had vented to her father about him.
“Yeah. That’s me. And I…”
“You’re here to see Jett,” the man responded astutely.
“I am,” Trask answered, his shoulders relaxing a little that the man seemed amiable, and wasn’t gunning for him.
“Well, I’m sorry. You can’t,” Randal returned succinctly.
What?
Since when did an adversary send out a volley like that while first offering smiles?
“Why not?” Trask asked as nonconfrontationally as possible.
This was, after all, not his territory.
The man grinned widely again, then answered.
“Because she went to see you.”
CHAPTER 20
Well,crap.
Jett was aggravated. Not because she’d had to fly to Maine.
Nope. That hadn’t been a hardship. Any time spent in the air was good.
Her problem was that she’d chewed the inside of her cheek raw, psyching herself up for a confrontation with Trask, and now she’d been totally deflated, like a balloon that had lost altitude.
