Trask knew she wasn’t out of the woods. If she kept skidding, and couldn’t keep the plane straight, she risked sliding off the ice and crashing into the tree line.

Trask waited, and waited, his chest contracting almost painfully.

“Success!” she finally squealed. “I made it.”

Trask’s whole body collapsed next to Richard, whose eyes were open and looking hopeful.

Trask patted him on the shoulder. “Your ride has arrived,” he choked out, but his next words, as he rolled to his back, were for Jett.

“Don’t ever do that to me again,” he lambasted her.

Then he remembered what she’d said in the heat of the moment.

“Shit, Jett. You…really love me?”

CHAPTER 31

“Give the lady a break, bro. She just landed a freaking plane on ice. Let her at least catch her breath,” Spencer teased.

Jett laughed at Spence’s audacity, but quickly hopped out of her plane, going around to the back to pull out a collapsable gurney she had stored away.

Yup.She owned one.

Trask would, no doubt, give her endless shit about having a Mary Poppins Cessna, but Jett found it always paid to be prepared.

She also grabbed an armful of blankets while she was at it. They’d be useful in making a painless transfer, andin keeping Richard warm.

Leaving the loading doors open for quick egress in a few minutes, Jett scrambled and slipped across the ice, arriving just as Trask threw open the shack door.

He grabbed her around the waist and before she could so much as blink, he pulled her in tightly for a quick, aggressive kiss. Then, as if he hadn’t just rocked Jett’s world, he stepped away and took the stretcher from her hands; just as abruptly turning and walking back to the patient.

“Okay, Richard. Here’s what’s going to happen,” he said comfortingly as he knelt next to the prone man. Jett followed on his heels, shaking off that whirlwind of a kiss.

She bent down to cover the patient in blankets while Trask took back his coat and put it on. Jett also laid a thick comforter down beside Richard as Trask unfolded the gurney.

Trask continued to talk softly and slowly. “We’re going to roll you to one side, Richard, then the other while we slip a blanket underneath you. Then we’ll use it to lift you onto the gurney, and you’re not going to try to help at all. You got that?”

Richard gave a barely perceptible nod.

“Good man,” Trask praised.

Jett really liked this caring side of Trask. It was something he didn’t often show, but she’d already known it was who hereallywas beneath the skin.

They swiftly got to work, and in less than a minute, Richard was cocooned and ready for transport.

“You ready?” Trask asked both her and Richard as he got to his feet.

There was no response from Richard this time, but Jett readied herself.

“As always.” Jett gave a nod.

“Okay. On three. One, two…”

They both lifted, and as if they’d done it a hundred times before, they easily synchronized their way out the door and headed for the plane.

“Some info for you,” Spence broke the silence, speaking in their ears as they made their way carefully across the expanse of ice. “These are the coordinates to the nearest airport. It should be an easy ten-minute flight.”

He rattled off the numbers, and Jett committed them to memory.
