"Let me walk you through the security plan and explain exactly what's going to happen when we get to Kansas City."
As he began outlining the tactical preparations LSIMT had put in place, Willow felt a mixture of fear and determination settling in her chest. She was tired of being hunted, tired of looking over her shoulder, tired of feeling like a prisoner in her own life.
If Kansas City was going to be the stage for a confrontation with her stalker, then she was ready to face whatever came next. And as long as Casper was standing beside her when she did, she felt she could do anything.

The flight to Kansas City passed in tense anticipation, with Casper reviewing security protocols while Willow worked on last-minute revisions to her keynote speech. From the air, the Kansas landscape spread beneath them like a patchwork quilt, but Casper's attention remained focused on the tactical challenges that awaited them on the ground.
Their hotel, the Grand Meridian, occupied a prime position in Kansas City's arts district. It was a stately building of dark red brick that rose above the bustling downtown streets. Logan had chosen the location for its strategic advantages, with direct sight lines to the Kansas City Convention Center across the street, where the screenwriters conference would unfold, and only one block from the historic Majestic Hotel, where the book signing would take place.
The Grand Meridian's lobby exuded understated elegance, with marble floors that reflected the light from crystal chandeliers and artwork that spoke to the city's commitment to cultural sophistication. But Casper's trained eye cataloged security features rather than aesthetic details, noting the multiple exit points, clear sight lines, and professional staff who moved with efficiency.
Their suite on the ninth floor offered panoramic views of the city while providing the tactical advantages LSIMT required. Floor-to-ceiling windows gave them visual surveillance of the streets below, and the layout included both public and private spaces that could accommodate their security team without cramping Willow's preparation time.
"This is incredible," Willow said as she moved to the windows, her tension visibly easing as she took in the sweeping view of Kansas City's skyline. "I can see the convention center and the Majestic as well."
Casper positioned himself where he could monitor both the street activity below and Willow's position near the windows. A sharp knock on the door interrupted their reconnaissance, and Casper's hand instinctively moved to his concealed weapon before he recognized the coded pattern that identified LSI personnel.
"That'll be the cavalry," he said, grinning while moving to admit Todd, Frazier, and Cole.
The three Keepers entered with casual professionalism that spoke of the camaraderie of having worked together under pressure. Todd carried a tactical bag that undoubtedly contained communication equipment and surveillance gear. Frazier had positioned himself to maintain visual contact with the hallway, while Cole immediately began assessing the suite's defensive capabilities.
"Ma'am," Todd said, extending his hand to Willow with genuine warmth. "We're honored to be working with you on this operation."
"Thank you for being here, but call me Willow. And the honor is all mine." Willow’s natural grace was evident even under stress. "I have to admit, I feel much safer knowing you're all watching out for me."
Casper gestured toward the seating area where they could review the weekend's logistics. "Willow, why don't you walk them through the schedule so everyone understands the tactical challenges we're facing?"
She settled into one of the suite's comfortable chairs, and Casper noted how naturally her gaze moved to his.
"The weekend centers around the Screenwriter’s Convention. Tomorrow, I will give a keynote speech.”
“That will be at the KC Convention Center,” Casper said, making notes on his tablet, knowing they would show up on the tablets of the three other Keepers. He then nodded for her to continue.
“I won’t be attending any of the conference sessions, so I’ll be free from then until Saturday morning. Then I will be at the historic Majestic Hotel for a book signing. I wrote a historical romance novel that was adapted into a screenplay and produced as a television movie," she began, her voice carrying the kind of confidence that came from discussing work she was passionate about. "I was told that they are expecting two to three hundred fans, mostly women between twenty-five and sixty who read historical romance.”
"Manageable crowd size," Frazier observed. "Single venue, controlled access points."
“Fans had to buy a ticket to get in,” Casper added. “While there will be a crowd, there will be lines of ticketed persons. The readers have to purchase the book in the lobby, and then will be allowed to get in the line for signing.”
She looked at him, and when he dipped his chin again, she smiled. It was hard for him to take his eyes off her, but he forced his expression not to change. Now, he needed his focus on the situation, not the beautiful woman on the sofa.
"That evening, we return to the screenwriters conference at the KC Convention Center.”
“The awards ceremony will have approximately three hundred attendees in a venue with dim lighting during presentations and multiple exit points,” Casper continued to report.
Cole leaned forward with interest. "What's your role in the ceremony?"
"I'm presenting the Breakthrough Screenwriter of the Year award for the organization, which means I'll be on stage during that presentation and visible to the entire audience." Willow's voice carried a slight tremor that spoke to her awareness of how exposed she'd be. "After the ceremony, there's a cocktail reception in the theater's grand ballroom."
Casper took notes on his tablet, his tactical mind clearly working through crowd-control scenarios.
Todd interjected, "The cocktail party presents the highest risk factor. The alcohol, reduced lighting, and social interaction could provide cover for approach attempts."
"Agreed," Casper said. "But it's also our best opportunity to identify anyone who seems overly focused on Willow or shows unusual behavior patterns."
Frazier consulted his own notes. "We'll have communication equipment that allows us real-time coordination between all team members. Casper will maintain proximity to you throughout, while Todd, Cole, and I establish perimeter security."
