“Gun!”
The loud crack preceded Alexander’s soft exhalation by aheartbeat.
It’s not like it is in themovies.
The dim thought echoed as she watched Alexander’s eyelids flutter, the dark lashes dramatic against his rapidly paling cheeks. He sank to his knees, almost in slow motion, pressing his hand to his side. Blood drenched his shirt just below where she thought his heart shouldbe.
Hauling her up again, her attacker tried to pull her the last few feet, but she couldn’t take her eyes off Alexander. “Let…me…go!” With more strength than she thought she possessed, she tore her arm from his grip. Shocked by the sudden move, he didn’t react quickly enough, and Elizabeth drew back and drove the heel of her hand into his nose. Blood spurted from his nostrils, and he snarled ather.
“I’ve had enough of you.” He raised the gun, but she flew at him with an anguished scream. Another shot echoed, her outer thigh burned, but she barely registered the sensation as pain. Grabbing his shoulders, she rammed her knee into his groin. He staggered again but didn’t godown.
The gun slid upwards to point at herhead.
“Elizabeth.”
Alexander’s gasping call seemed to startle both of them, and her assailant’s eyes flicked away from her for a fraction of a second. Another shot rang out, and Elizabeth’s world crashed down around her as she screamed inpain.
