“I know,” Millie said. “I’ve researched the drug before. There’s a chance it could be in my hair, but there’s also a chance it won’t be.”

The chief coughed. “I wouldn’t waste time being tested since it’s so late, but it’s up to you. We’ll figure out who killed him, Millie. I’m on it. But for now, you stay low and keep away from the Baker family. You understand me?”

“Gladly,” she said.

“Also, be careful. Um, say hi to Mae for me.” He ended the call.

Millie stared at the phone. Say hi?

Scott finished his sandwich. “I take it that was bad news?”

“There wasn’t any trace of any drug in my blood.”

He placed his paper napkin on the plate. “That doesn’t mean you weren’t drugged.”

“I know,” she said. “I had to have been drugged, because I don’t remember anything.”

Scott scratched his neck. “You could call Wolfe or Dana,” he suggested, mentioning two of their Deep Ops colleagues. “They were drugged a while back, remember?”

“Yeah. I don’t want to call Wolfe.” She chewed on her lip.

“Probably smart,” Scott agreed. “If you called him, he’d be here instantly, pregnant fiancée in tow. I’m uncertain whether he and JT would see eye to eye.”

That could be a disaster, actually. So far, she was impressed that JT and Scott seemed to be getting along. For now, anyway. “I’m quite certain they wouldn’t.”

“All right,” Scott said. “So who’s this June that JT said you planned to meet for a drink?”

“June Barbary works at the Rapid Water Diner. We grew up together, and whenever I’m home, we hang out.”

He reached down to scratch Roscoe behind the ears. “Let’s start with her, then I want to retrace your steps from all day yesterday.”

“I can do that.” Millie tried to find her balance. Perhaps changing into her own clothes would help.

Movement sounded outside, and Millie craned her neck to look out past the flimsy curtains. A group of young women, all wearing bright pink sweatshirts, had just arrived with their fishing poles. JT strode to meet them to prepare for the expedition.

She needed to peruse the schedule to make sure that she didn’t have work to do the next day.

“Are you in direct competition with the Bakers?” Scott asked.

“Yes.” She fought a shiver. “His family is full of jerks. They’ll be coming for me.” How was she going to keep JT from destroying them the second they did?

Scott texted something into his phone.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m having a background check performed on them, on your friend June, and on your brother.”

She sat straighter. “Leave my brother out of this. I mean it, Scott.”

He stared at her. “If you say so.” He texted something with his left hand, eyeing the rest of her sandwich.

She nudged the plate across the table. “Go ahead. I’m not very hungry.”

“Thanks.” He took the sandwich.

Roscoe looked imploringly at Millie. She reached for a little bit of the ham on the counter to toss to him. He snatched the piece out of the air easily.

“Softy,” Scott said quietly.
