Another man laughed in the background. Millie stiffened as the camera panned to Rupert Skinner. “Son of a bitch,” she muttered. “Skinner is there.” Nausea rolled through Millie, and she watched as long as she could before slapping the video screen closed.

Brigid had gone pale, even though she hadn’t viewed the tape from across the room. “I don’t want to see it,” she said.

“Neither do I.” Scott’s jaw looked as if it had been carved from granite.

Millie fought to keep from throwing up. Clay had basically filmed the entire night, which included rape by both him and Rupert Skinner.

She gulped.

“I’m going to take these to the police station myself,” Brigid said.

“Let’s catalog them first,” Scott murmured, holding up a hand, fury turning his eyes a cobalt blue. “I don’t want to see any of these, but I do want to make a spreadsheet of names and dates just so we keep track.” He secured a pen from the drawer. “This does open up a whole group of possible killers. Not that Clay didn’t deserve it—because he did.”

Millie sat at the table, her Pop-Tart swirling in her gut. “We need to get Skinner, now.”

“Oh, don’t worry,” Scott said darkly. “He’ll be arrested before the end of the day.”

Chapter Forty

After a lunch of chicken casserole, Millie hustled around the kitchen, yanking open drawers. “Where are the... Oh, here they are.” She found the bows to plant on the voluminous baby present she’d bought for Verna.

Her phone buzzed and she reached for it, finding a text from June.

Can you talk?

She glanced at her watch and quickly texted back.

Not really. Let’s talk at the shower.

While she loved June, she still wasn’t sure what to say about the lies her friend had told.

Please, Millie. I really need to speak with you before the shower. Can you swing by my house?

Millie chewed on her lip. She didn’t have time to drive all the way out to June’s house—it lay in the opposite direction from Valerie’s cabin. Also, she wanted to conduct one more search for Kat in the bunkhouse just in case he’d sought refuge during the night.

She sent another text.I don’t have time.

Please, Mills. It’s important. Can you meet me at Valerie’s just twenty minutes early? I really have to talk to you.

Scott looked over her shoulder. “Is June always this pushy?”

“No.” Millie’s temples began to ache. “I wonder if she knows that Valerie told me she’d been dating Clay.”

“It doesn’t sound like dating in the public sense,” Scott said. “They might have just hooked up once in a while.”

Millie didn’t care what they’d been doing. “She’s been a friend of mine for a long time, and I don’t understand why she’d lie to me.” She shot off another text.

I’ll try to get to Valerie’s fifteen minutes early, and then maybe we can grab a drink after the shower.

Scott cleared his throat. “I had Brigid run June’s financials just to double-check.”

Millie turned around to face him. “You did what? June’s been my friend my entire life.”

“I know, but she’s in financial trouble.”

“Most of this town’s in financial trouble right now,” she said, instantly going hot.

Scott zipped up his windbreaker. “I’m aware of that, but June had her new SUV repossessed a month ago, and she’s three payments behind with the mortgage on her home. I’m just saying, Millie, sometimes people who need money do things you’d never suspect.”
