He shoved into her, his head back, his body one taut line of muscle. She lived inside him so deeply she could never get out, and he forced himself into her body just as strongly, tightly, trying to leave his imprint as hard, strong, and solid as she was inside him.

She tightened around him. Her sheath was slick and tight, and he started to pound harder. Hammering into her, taking her, she thrashed her head. And then, finally, her arms must have given out because she dropped her head onto the floor, giving him even better access.

Her gasps were those of ecstasy and need, and he held out for as long as he could until he finally shoved deep inside her, as hard as he could. “Now, Mia,” he ordered.

She exploded around him, gripping him so tightly he lost his breath, and then he erupted inside her, pouring into her body, shuddering with a climax. Soon, only the sound of their panting filled the stark silence. She gave a soft chuckle that flipped his heart right over. Just for her. How did she do that? Then she mumbled something unintelligible. It might have been his name.

“What?” He leaned over and smoothed her hair away from her face.

She blinked, only one eye visible with her head turned to the side. “I love you, too.”

Chapter39

Mia sat on the back deck of Seth’s home with a cup of coffee in front of her. It was a chilly autumn day, but she wore boots and a jacket as she admired the forest that stretched out in so many directions. The backyard was long and wide with flower beds on either side that hadn’t been tended in quite a while. If she and Seth decided to stay here, she might have to take up gardening. A pounding sounded on the outside door. She jerked but felt too content to move.

After she and Seth had returned home on the plane the night before, he’d forced her to go to Doc Sharon to make sure everything was all right. The wolf healer had said that, as far as she could tell, Mia was fine. Then she asked why they were bugging her at midnight, especially since Mia had already been to the hospital in Seattle.

Seth had growled a few things and then brought Mia home, where she’d slept like the dead. Well, except for the two times Seth had awakened her for two more rounds of wild sex. Apparently, her getting kidnapped hadn’t sat well with him, even though she’d taken care of herself just fine. She knew when he walked out onto the deck because the area behind her suddenly warmed.

“Who was at the door?” She turned and noticed Kurt Colbey next to Seth. “Oh. Hey, Kurt.”

Kurt looked at her and then at Seth before shaking his head and moving around to take a seat at the table. “We have to talk about this wolf thing.”

In answer, Seth reached for a blanket out of a bin near the door and wrapped it around Mia. She looked up at him. “I’m warm.”

“Now, you’re warmer.” He pulled out the chair right next to her. He was one solid line of muscle and irritation this morning, so Mia figured another blanket wouldn’t hurt.

“I’m surprised you told Kurt,” she mused. Seth had let her know about their conversation the night before.

He sighed. “Had no choice. Needed the CCTV information to find you.”

Kurt swallowed loudly. “I can’t believe wolf shifters exist.” He leaned forward. “What else is out there?”

“You know enough,” Seth drawled, reaching over and claiming Mia’s cup of coffee to take a deep gulp.

“I just don’t know what to think,” the agent said, watching the wind lazily scatter leaves across the grass.

Mia could understand. It had taken her a while. “How are we doing with tracing Rodney’s movements?”

“It’s slow-going so far,” Kurt said, shaking his head. “We’re digging through his life now. We’re tearing it apart. We’ll connect him to the other murders, but he was good. He didn’t leave any DNA. Delaney taught him well.” Kurt looked down, his intelligent eyes staring at the clean glass table. “I’m sorry, Mia. You were right about Delaney having a partner. I should have listened to you.”

“Yeah, you should’ve,” Seth said curtly. “But at the moment, we have more important things to talk about. Namely, you understand you have to keep our secret, right?”

Kurt’s head jerked back, and he stared at Seth. “No kidding, Volk. Who am I gonna tell? ‘Hey, guys, wolf shifters exist!’ Not only would I lose my job, I’d probably also lose my freedom.”

“Actually, you’d lose your life.” There was no humor in Seth’s eyes.

Mia studied her mate. All in all, the fact that he hadn’t killed Kurt yet was probably a good sign. Seth was a solid wall of rock-hard muscle, and his eyes were pure ice in the mellow morning light. He looked like he could handle anything, and frankly, he probably could.

Mia tried to bring herself back to the case. “I can’t figure out why Rodney killed Rocko Blunt.”

Kurt shrugged. “He must have seen something. The nurse’s body was dumped at the commune, and Blunt was usually on guard duty—at least according to Brother Jeremiah. We’ll figure it out, Mia. Don’t worry.”

“You’ll figure it out,” Seth said quietly. “You need to excuse us for a while, Colbey. I’ve put this off for long enough. My mate and I need to have a little discussion about her going to Seattle without checking in with me.”

Mia jolted.What the heck?

Then Seth lifted his head toward the tree line. “Go back inside, now.”
