“Emily stayed the night?” Mia asked.
“Yeah,” Erik answered. “We got home at about midnight after partying in town for a while.”
At her amused snort, he rolled his eyes. “Separate bedrooms, I assure you.”
It was an interesting thought, those two together, and Mia wondered if maybe they did fit and hadn’t realized it yet. Or perhaps they would only be friends, which created all sorts of problems for all of them. “Maybe you should stay here with your fiancée.”
“Nope, little sister, I’m taking you to town.” He opened the door wider.
“Fine.” She moved out into the dreary day, jumping when Erik followed and opened an umbrella over her head. “Are you kidding me?” she muttered.
“Nope,” he said cheerfully. “Not only will you be safe today, you’ll also be dry.” He escorted her to the SUV and smoothly opened the back door.
She climbed inside, and the smell of new vehicle and thick leather filled her nostrils. The door shut.
“Morning.” Todd filled the front passenger seat.
“Morning,” she muttered, looking at the windows. “Please don’t tell me these are bulletproof.”
He shrugged and gestured toward her seat belt. “I won’t tell you that, then. Put your seat belt on.”
Oh, this was getting ridiculous. She glared at the house, but Seth wasn’t anywhere in sight.
Erik jumped into the vehicle and glanced back. “Put your seat belt on.”
“You put yours on,” she retorted.
“I’m not wearing one in case I need to get out quickly,” he said. “We’re not moving until you buckle up.”
This was unbelievable. “You two are being jackasses,” she retorted, yanking the seat belt across her chest and securing it. “Are you telling me that Seth bought a new vehicle with bulletproof glass?” She thought only presidents or billionaires had these kinds of vehicles.
“I’m not telling you anything.” Erik drove away from the house.
No wonder Seth had been so agreeable about her going into Seattle. “Wait a minute. You’re not driving me all the way to the city, are you?”
“We sure are,” Todd said. “I’m a deputy, remember? It’s my duty to follow you. I understand we have to pick up a couple of FBI agents, and we are happy to drive you all.”
She crossed her arms. “I have no doubt Kurt will refuse to buy plane tickets for you to DC.”
Erik glanced at Todd, who barely held back a chuckle.
Mia crossed her arms. “This is getting ridiculous.”
Chapter23
Seth scented the wolf shifters at the door before the first knock sounded. He loped toward it, his body relaxed after the night with Mia. He was pretty amused that he’d sent two of his best fighters with her to Seattle, and if she thought she was going to DC with just an FBI escort, she didn’t know him at all. Oh, he had no doubt she’d give him hell when she got the chance, but it was worth it.
He opened the door to find Greg and Jenny Treverton on his porch. “Come on in. Thanks for coming so early.” He moved to the side and gestured them toward what had been his father’s study. It didn’t suit Seth, but it would have to do for now.
The couple walked into the room and took a seat on the sofa. Whereas Greg was large with thick, dark hair and dark brown eyes, Jenny was petite for a wolf shifter at probably only five foot nine with dark blond hair and soft blue eyes.
“We had my sister take care of the kids this morning so we could give an interview to the FBI,” Greg said. “They wanted to meet early because they had something going on in Seattle, I guess.”
“How did it go?” Seth asked, leaning against his desk.
Jenny pushed a pillow behind her elbow. “It went well. I could sense that Agent Colbey didn’t believe us, but we easily answered every question he had.”
“Was he the only one in the room?” Seth asked.
