“They sure do,” Jeremiah said, looking again at Mia but with no expression on his rugged face this time. “There was a fire at the Volk house, then Benjamin Volk died, supposedly from natural causes. Then Pete died in a mysterious hunting accident right afterward? I’m telling you, something is way off here.”

Mia wanted to throw up.

A small knock sounded on the door. “Come in.” She called. Was Seth back already?

“Hey.” Luna poked her head in. “I, ah, need to speak with you.”

Both Jeremiah and Kurt instantly pushed back from the table and stood.

“Hi.” Jeremiah held out a hand. “We haven’t met.”

“Hello.” Luna shook his hand and quickly released it, her odd, greenish-blue gaze remaining on Mia. Her hair was an even wilder mess of curls down her back, and it looked like she’d been running her fingers through it. “I’m Luna, Mia’s friend.”

Kurt leaned over the table. “Special Agent in Charge Kurt Colbey.” He reached for her hand, a light flush covering his cheekbones.

Mia watched, bemused. The woman was pixie-like and lovely but appeared more confused than anything by their reactions. “Hello.” She quickly shook his hand, her gaze searching Mia’s face. “I really need to speak with you. Like, right now.”

Kurt stood taller. “I’ve got this, Mia.”

Mia wanted to hear the rest of what Jeremiah had to say, but Luna appeared to be vibrating in place. “All right.” She stood, wobbled slightly, and then followed the wolf shifter out of the room and down the hall to what had been her office. Maybe it was still her office. “Where’s Erik?”

Luna shrugged and shut the door, leaning against it. “He said he had business at the mine, and I promised to stay at the family homestead until he returned.”

Mia leaned against the desk. Being so duplicitous in the interrogation room had given her a headache. She hated lying. “How did you get here?”

“This was too important to wait.” Luna shoved her hair away from her face with both hands. “I stole a truck. What’s Erik going to do? Kidnap me?”

That was a good point. A light flare of panic sizzled through Mia. “What’s going on?”

Luna took a deep breath. “I have a couple of contacts in the shifter world that nobody knows about. We’re all interested in healing and science, and we keep in touch, even though we shouldn’t.”

Mia’s chin dropped. “Contacts outside the Stope Packs Coalition?” She hadn’t realized any of them talked to wolf shifter packs not aligned with them.

Luna nodded. “Yes. It’s a secret that could possibly get me killed. Or at least in a lot of trouble.”

“I won’t say a word.” Mia’s stomach roiled. “Please tell me you didn’t share any information about me, Seth, or the Silver Pack.”

“Of course not.” Luna clasped her hands together. “As far as they know, I just had a question out of curiosity. Or I was talking about somebody in my pack. I didn’t tell them about the kidnapping.” She chewed on her lip and looked around the sparse office. “Okay. This is awkward. But did you and Seth have sexual relationsbeforehe mated you?”

Mia frowned. “Huh?”

“Did you have sex that did not include mating?” Luna whispered.

“Yes.” Mia’s throat went dry. “Why?”

Panic shone brightly in Luna’s eyes. “What are the chances you’re pregnant?” She wrung her hands together. “That you became so before you were mated?”

Mia jolted as she tried to recount the last few weeks.

Pregnant?

Chapter11

The blood rushed through Mia’s head so quickly that her ears rang. She staggered, her gaze dropping to the floor. “Come on.” She led Luna back into the hallway.

The interrogation room door opened, and Kurt slid outside, shutting it quietly. “What is going on?” he hissed.

She blinked and tried to focus. “Um, something’s come up.”
