Tommy rolled his eyes.
His mother jabbed him in the ribs and he jumped. “Now, Tommy. We have to meet with the principal next.”
He winced and rubbed his side. “Fine. Mr. Masterson was giving a test yesterday, and I didn’t study, so Davie and I decided to ditch school. We went and hung out in Aunt Sharon’s greenhouse, smoked some weed, and watched movies on my laptop all day. It was great. Wish I could do that every day.”
“My clienthypotheticallysmoked weed yesterday,” Steve Bearing said helpfully.
Huck rolled his eyes.
“Understood,” Laurel interjected. “How did you know about the greenhouse?”
“Me and Davie helped Aunt Sharon out there sometimes when she needed heavy things lifted, and she didn’t give a crap if we hung out. Had enough of a stash that she didn’t notice when we took some. She was kind of stupid.”
“Don’t talk that way about your aunt.” His mother shook her head. “I had no idea about the drugs. And it’s Davie and I.”
Tommy again rolled his eyes.
“Who owns the property?” Huck asked.
“Dunno,” Tommy replied.
Laurel did. Nester had traced it the night before, and the property was owned by a large corporation with land holdings all over the Pacific Northwest. She’d already spoken with a representative in Seattle, and they’d been leasing the property to Sharon for five years. She paid yearly and that payment covered all expenses, hence nothing was in her name. Laurel would have Nester investigate the corporation further, but so far, it checked out. She’d bring Huck up to date later. “Did you know your aunt was having an affair?”
Tommy looked away.
Teri Bearing sighed. “I did. She was dating a cardiologist on the side but ended the relationship a few weeks before leaving for the cabin.” Her eyes widened. “Do you think he killed her?”
“I wonder why you didn’t mention this the other day,” Laurel said.
Steve leaned forward. “My mother was in shock the other day. She did not intentionally keep facts from an investigating officer.”
Sure she had. Most likely to protect her sister’s reputation or her family from a vicious news cycle. “That’s good, considering it’s illegal to hinder an investigation,” Laurel said pointedly.
Steve straightened his glasses. “Watch it, Agent Snow. We’re here voluntarily and can leave at any minute.”
“What size are your feet, Tommy?” Laurel switched topics.
“Twelve.” A slight smile played on his lips. “You know what they say about feet.”
His mother elbowed him.
Laurel kept his gaze. “No. What do they say about feet?” How would he take to being challenged?
“They say that—”
“Shut up.” Steve elbowed him, looking more like a brother than a lawyer for a second.
Huck set down his cup. “Were you and Davie together all day?”
“Yes.”
“You’re certain?” Laurel asked.
Tommy tugged down his shirt. “Yes. I answered you. We were together all day. Period.”
“Did you fall asleep at all?” Huck asked.
Tommy shrugged. “We were really high. Maybe for a bit. Who fucking cares?”
