“They do, indeed,” he said. “Are you a witch or a fairy?”

“I wish,” she blurted out before she could stop herself. “I’d love to have magic powers. Can you imagine?” So witches and fairies existed as well. It kind of made sense. Most fables were based on some sort of truth. “What are you, Garrett?” It was obvious he wasn’t human, now that she knew there were other species on earth. While she should be going crazy or at least freaking out, the entire situation just felt surreal, as if she was in a dream. Maybe she was dreaming.

“You’re not dreaming.”

Oh. She’d said that out loud. “Did you heal my arm?” There had been such pain, and she’d seen the bone. How had he healed it? Unless he also had magic. “Are you a witch?”

“No. You healed your arm. I just helped by giving you my blood.”

Blood? Her stomach lurched. “I drank your blood?”

“A lot of it.”

Gross. Just gross. She hoped the pizza arrived soon because now all she could taste was blood. She and a couple of other girls had figured out how to watch movies on the internet before the headmistress shut them down, and they’d watched a scary movie where the werewolf gave his blood to save a teenager. “Are you immortal?” What was this world she’d walked into? Was it a secret? Did all of her time at school mean she didn’t know the real world? “Garrett?”

“Yes. Well, mostly. I can be beheaded or perhaps burned. It’s time you stopped fucking with me, sweetheart.”

The spit dried up in her mouth. Even though he looked relaxed, the guy wasn’t truly human, and for some reason, he didn’t believe her about anything. She eyed the door but knew she wouldn’t escape before he could grab her. “Is it a secret? I mean about the shifters and everyone else who’s, well, mostly immortal?”

“Yes.”

Wonderful. Now she knew this momentous secret that she wasn’t supposed to know. Getting on the back of that bike had been a mistake, and she’d done so with her eyes wide open. Unless she was actually dreaming. Witches didn’t really exist. It was impossible.

“Yes, they do,” Garrett countered.

She had to stop thinking out loud. “Are you trying to frighten me?”

“Baby, if I wanted you scared, you’d be terrified,” he drawled.

Well. No problem with his ego, that was for certain. She covered a shiver by resettling on her seat. Apparently he could scare her, but that was to be expected, considering his size. Although she did know how to defend herself. She eyed him.

His grin was slow but didn’t reach his eyes. “Go ahead. You want to fight?”

She couldn’t breathe. “Not really.”

“Smart girl. Finally.” His wrists rested on his thighs, and his hands appeared loose and relaxed. “How did you take my blood without blowing up?”

She blinked. “Blowing up?”

“Yeah. Humans can’t drink our blood without dying, and yet you did. In fact, you healed your arm.”

Sparks shot through her, and her face blazed. “You gave me blood that you thought would kill me?” She stood, trembling.

“Just a little, and then you took more on your own.” He didn’t seem fazed by her anger. “Then your arm started to heal, so I figured you could handle it. Of course, that means you’re nowhere near human. What’s your enhancement?”

He could at least look a little chastised by her temper. “You’re speaking Greek to me.” She paused. “Hold that thought. I speak Greek. You’re speaking an unknown form of Gaelic to me. I’m not enhanced.” In any way.

His lids half-closed, giving him a predaceous look that made her want to hide behind her chair. “My patience is rapidly dwindling. What is your enhancement? Are you psychic, empathic, or what?”

Perhaps her head injury had sent her into a coma.

“You’re not in a coma.” Any amusement had fled his expression.

She held up a hand as if to ward off his anger. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m none of those things.” Her mind reeled. “Why? Why do you think I have gifts like that?”

“Because only an immortal or an enhanced human female could’ve taken my blood, and you did. So you must be.” He cocked his head. “If you were immortal, your wounds should’ve started healing even before I gave you blood. Though, with you, I’m not sure.”

It was like he lived in a completely different world than she did. Of course, she had been secluded at school. “What’s an enhanced human female? I mean, why does it matter?” It would be nice to be psychic.
