Relief sizzled through my arms and I completely relaxed. Teddy had seen everything that had happened and wasn’t out to get me. Hopefully the women in the truck carried insurance. “That’s all true.”
Bud surveyed the room with his dark gaze. “That’s what we’ve heard from witnesses on the sidewalk as well. We’re running down the license plate number from Washington state. Can you tell me who was driving the truck or why you were targeted? This time?”
How much should I tell him? Aiden still was undercover, and I was a suspect in Sasha’s death, but those women could’ve killed somebody. I went with the full truth. Well, almost. “I don’t know their names, but I recognized the two women in the front seat as being friends of folks in the Lorde’s motorcycle club.” Bud wouldn’t know about Aiden being ATF, probably. I think just a couple of the higher-ups and Detective Pierce were privy to that information right now. I hoped.
Bud lifted one thick eyebrow. “Aren’t you still dating Aiden Devlin?”
I nodded and instantly regretted the movement when lights flashed behind my eyes with stabbing precision.
“Isn’t he the president of the Lordes?” Bud asked.
“Yeah. I think the women were after me for some other reason.” I wasn’t sure where to go with this.
Teddy leaned forward. “Who are the Lordes?”
Kelsey patted my hand. “The Lordes are a motorcycle club out of Washington. They’ve gotten in trouble for running drugs and guns.”
I bit my lip. Did Kelsey know that Aiden had been undercover with the ATF? I didn’t think so, but the memory of the day everything had blown up was hazy. Her sister had been arrested that day, but I didn’t remember either Krissy or Kelsey seeing Aiden with his ATF team. I’d have to discreetly question her when I got the chance. “I think the women are dating members.”
“I don’t see why any Lordes old lady would be targeting you. You don’t have a bulls eye on your back. No way,” Kelsey said, her eyebrow rising to the bandage.
Figured she’d know the lingo. “I’m very confused by this as well,” I muttered.
Teddy tore his gaze away from Kelsey’s pretty face to focus on me. “I don’t understand. You’re dating a motorcycle gang president, and girlfriends of his members tried to kill you?” He glanced at Bud and then back to me. “Maybe they’re not dating? Does he want you dead? Is this how motorcycle gangs operate?”
Kelsey threw her hands up. “As far as I know. Especially one that works outside the law.”
Bud set his shoulders back. “Have you and Devlin had a fight?”
“No,” I said. It was too bad I couldn’t tell Bud about Aiden’s true job.
“We’re going to have to talk to him,” Bud said. “Maybe he can shed some light on this. I hope the motorcycle gang isn’t trying to kill you, Anna. While they’ve been hit hard the last year, they still are dangerous.”
“Club,” I said, unable to hold back any longer. “It’s a motorcycle club and not a motorcycle gang.” It was so much better for my brain to focus on something trivial than everything else, especially the fact that those two women had tried to kill me.
Bud looked at me like I’d gone nuts. Yeah, he’d looked at me like that before—more than once. “We’ll need to talk to Devlin. Where is he?”
“Right now, I have no idea where he is, but I’m assuming he’ll be checking in soon. We are still dating and he doesn’t want me dead.” I chewed on the inside of my cheek. “He won’t know anything, but feel free. Has there been a detective assigned to this case yet?” I held my breath.
“Yeah. Detective Pierce is on it,” Bud said. “Somehow he always gets stuck with your situations.” Then he drew himself up and looked tall as well as beefy. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Geez. Get a guy shot once, and he never lets it go. “It’s okay, Bud. No worries.” I couldn’t really blame him.
Kelsey smoothed hair away from my eyes, and her touch was gentle. “Can I do anything for you? Like call your office and let them know you’re out for a while?” She really was sweet, and the concern in her gaze was genuine.
I smiled. “You’re kind, but there’s nothing to do. In fact, we’re still on for your court hearing tomorrow. I’ll be fine then. This isn’t anything a Tylenol or two won’t fix.”
My sister Tessa ran into the room, her reddish-blonde hair flying every direction. She took in the scene, noticed I was conscious and shook her head. “What the hell happened now?”
Bud snorted. “What do you mean? This is a normal Thursday for Anna.”
Chapter 14
Tessa helped me out of her car in my driveway just as Aiden tore up on his motorcycle. He was off the bike and gently grasped my arms. “What happened? How badly are you hurt?” His Irish brogue came out full force, and the glittering in his eyes held danger.
I blinked. “I’m fine. Car accident. We were on the phone, remember?” Although it was all a little muddled.
“Yeah. I was north of Spokane and got here as fast as I could. Your phone kept going to voicemail.” He looked me over and then stepped back. “How bad?” His jaw tightened.
