Her grin only widened.

“Then, shall we continue on to the next cave?”

How could she be thinking about exploring after what they’d just done? He would like nothing better than to sit and relax for a moment. Instead, he retrieved his lantern and followed her to the mouth of the cave.

No longer was the sun shining, but dark clouds had moved in. It could indicate simply rain or a storm, which would only frighten Eliza.

“We should return to the house.”

Eliza gave a quick nod and nearly sprinted from the cave. He ran after her and they practically raced back to the manor and reached it just as the rain started.

They were both laughing as they entered the house, which was something he had not done in a very long time.

Even the footman stationed outside of her parlor looked at him with concern.

Lucian may not believe in changing for anyone, but he liked the changes that were occurring within himself and he had Eliza to thank for those. He just hoped that she would remain once the danger had passed.

Their perfect afternoonwas nearly ruined by rain.

“I should leave you to work on your book.”

“I suppose I should,” she said.

“Is there something else that you would like to do?” he asked with a grin.

How many times could they engage in intimacy in one day? Though, she would have no objection, except if Stella came looking for her.

“Oh, I do hope that Stella and Saul have returned.” With that, she left the parlor and hurried to the entrance to ask the butler.

“They returned a short time ago,” he assured her much to her relief.

“Miss Weston, what is all over the back of your dress?”

She turned to find Stella coming down the stairs.

“There is something on my dress?” She tried to turn and look.

“Likely from when you were leaning against the wall in the cave,” Lucian offered as he came down the corridor.

Her face heated as she recalled how she had been pressed against that wall.

“Yes, of course. I had forgotten.”

He lifted a brow. “Whereas I found your search for the mummy unforgettable.”

“Did you find it?” Stella asked with excitement.

“Another empty cave,” Eliza sighed.

“I disagree for I recovered a slingshot.”

“Yes, well, it wasn’t the treasure I was hoping to find.”

“And I recovered happy memories.”

He had also created one for her as well.

“I will ask Cook to make you a pot of tea while you go change your gown,” Stella offered
