“You can have the rest,” I say.
He inhales the rest of the food on the plate.
I watch while sipping my coffee. “Such an animal.”
He winks at me and smiles. When we’re both finished, I look up at him.
“Thank you for breakfast. And for staying over last night to take care of me,” I say, my voice soft. “It was really sweet of you.”
His smile is warm as he swipes a chunk of my hair behind my ear. “My pleasure, wild girl.”
I can’t help but grin wide at that nickname. “I thought you would only say that when I did something wild.”
“I like the way you blush when I call you that.”
My skin tingles once more.Oh.
His gaze on me sharpens as he scans my face. “You blushed when we kissed last night. It was really sexy.”
My heartbeat kicks up. We’re sitting so close to each other that I can feel the heat from Nick’s body skim over me.
“I was always so embarrassed at how much I blush,” I say in a shy voice.
“You shouldn’t be. You’re so pretty when you blush, Poppy.” He plays with the ends of my hair. “You’re always pretty.”
The air is thick between us as we fall quiet. His gaze falls to my lips, and my entire body aches. I want him to kiss mesobad.
A loud knock at my door shatters the moment.
I hop up out of my chair to answer it. When I look through the peephole, my stomach drops.
It’s Brody.
Chapter 27
Poppy
Istep back and let exhale sharply. “You’re kidding me.”
“What’s wrong?” Nick asks, walking over.
“It’s Brody.” I close my eyes and tug a hand through my hair, annoyed and pissed off. “Why is he here?”
Another loud knock. When I look at Nick, he’s glaring at the door.
“I don’t know what his problem is. I told him to leave you alone,” he mutters.
“You did?”
“Yeah. Last night, when you were in the bathroom helping Anna with her dress, Brody came up to me.”
That irritated feeling turns to anger. “What did he say to you?”
“Nothing worth repeating,” Nick says.
My stomach sinks again. That probably means Brody said mean things to Nick. Or he was saying hurtful things about me.
“Poppy, are you in there? Open the door.”
